Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.


Why does the job exist?

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) is a center of stewardship, knowledge, and understanding of the artistic, cultural, and intellectual achievements of the diverse Indigenous peoples of the Greater Southwest. MIAC's mission is achieved by inspiring the public to learn more about the vibrant cultures of the Southwest, caring for and interpreting the collection, and collaboration with the Indigenous people of the Southwest. The Deputy Director assists the Executive Director in the administrative and strategic operation of the museum, including the Laboratory of Anthropology, Center for New Mexico Archaeology (CNMA), and Museum Hill Cafe.


How does it get done?

The Deputy Director oversees operations of the Museum, Library of Laboratory of Anthropology, and the Archaeological Repository at the CNMA. Responsibilities span a wide range of activities including, but not limited to, strategic planning, grant and annual budget preparation, preservation of and access to collections, security and visitor services, human resources and personnel policies, and management of facilities including planning maintenance and coordinating repairs. Projects are completed through close collaboration with other Department of Cultural Affairs bureaus and partners, including Facility Management Bureau, Museum Resources Division, and Museum of New Mexico Foundation. The Deputy Director represents the Museum to the public, Museum members, associated foundations, and the State of New Mexico in the Director's absence and as delegated by the Director with all the constituencies affiliated with the Museum.

Museum visitors include local, national, and international learners of all ages. MIAC seeks to be an inclusive and accessible museum that welcomes all of our public. Through continued collaboration, MIAC has maintained and strengthened relationships with members of the 23 tribes located in New Mexico's nineteen Pueblos, three Apache Tribes, and the Navajo Nation, as well as native nations in Colorado, Arizona and Texas. After nearly 100 years since the founding of the Laboratory of Anthropology, MIAC has a passionate community of supporters.


Ideal Candidate

Preference for related background or demonstrated interest in Indigenous studies, culture, issues, or arts. Preference for experience working closely with Tribal communities. Preference for applicants with a Master's Degree in Museum Studies, Business Administration, Native American Studies, anthropology, Archaeology, or Art History. Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and nine (9) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling thirteen (13) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.


Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and dust. There is regular interaction with the public. Extensive computer and phone use and extended periods of standing, walking, and lifting. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
