Department Overview The Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology serves as a beacon of both internationally recognized research and locally delivered advanced clinical care. The Dotter Department of Interventional Radiology is a part of the OHSU School of Medicine, with its own admitting service and clinic. We provide all the diagnostic angiographic, interventional radiologic, and neurointerventional services to the OHSU and VA Hospitals. The Interventional Radiology practice at OHSU has a primary location at the 11A Angiography Proce-dural Lab, at CHH2, and an ambulatory clinic in the Physicians Pavilion. The IR team cares for both adult and pediatric patients with a wide variety of diseases requiring image guided interventions and management. The RN Navigator is a key member of the multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes physician, advance practice providers, medical assistant, schedulers, and other clinical and management support staff. Responsibilities include direct and indirect patient care, responsibilities related to EPIC, patient triage (includes telephone triage), participation in quality improvement, and program and staff development. This position requires independent critical thinking, very strong assessment skills, case management, transition of care, and the ability to appropriately triage patients with complex, conditions. The RN must be able to work as a team with providers, nurses, medical assistants, schedulers, and all other disciplines as needed, and functions in a collaborative manner to ensure effective and timely communication with the patient, family, and other team members. The OHSU Registered Nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The RN’s care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics and meets the standards/expectations of a Professional Practice Model. In that model, the RN demonstrates the professional role obligations of scientist, leader, practitioner, and knowledge transfer. Professional accountability enriches the RN’s engagement as a leader in promoting an inter-professional culture of collaborative decision‑making, innovation, life‑long learning, and teamwork. Function/Duties of Position Independent nursing practice: all aspects performed within scope of RN licensure and role: Direct and indirect patient care Nurse visits with and without a provider for case management, triage, telephone triage and patient education Apply critical thinking skills and ability to independently manage patient assessment and planning, My Chart messages, phone calls and routed EPIC encounters. Return calls to patients about lab/test results, answer medication questions. Assess the physical, emotional, social and educational needs of patients who are calling or coming into the Interventional Radiology clinic in a comprehensive and systematic manner, including patient history Take initiative to review patient charts before provider visits Work with medical assistants to set up labs and other tests prior to patient appointment Follow up on prior office visits Tend to most patient care needs in between visits with the provider (phone calls and My Chart messages, etc. without just forwarding to the provider) Be able to evaluate issues and understand the management goals and options Engage in coordination of care Transitions of care Understand who to contact and when Assist with prior authorizations and FMLA paperwork as needed Referral review as needed Identify why the patient is being referred Identify urgency of referral and triage as appropriate Comply with DNV-GL hospital accreditation requirements and standards and OHSU policies and procedures Program development and implementation: Engage in continuous process improvement Engage in continuous quality assurance directives Maintain a willingness to embrace change with a positive attitude Engage in workflow and documentation optimization and standardization Independently upgrade own knowledge and skills by participating in a variety of educational strategies Actively participate in service excellence, including engaging with patients and their families to understand concerns and problem‑solve. Communication: Effectively communicate to providers, patients and other staff as needed (Epic, Outlook, telephone, in person) Be proficient in synthesizing patient information and summarize in a succinct, effective manner Positive, supportive verbal communication with patients, families, providers and support staff Communicate appropriately with other professionals to discuss relevant aspects of patient care Provide appropriate education to patients and their families: Provide education, counseling, information and support that is tailored to the patients' needs (medication, disease‑specific advice, etc.) Ensure that the patient and their family understand the plan of care recommended by the provider and their questions are fully answered Be able to bridge the patients' understanding and help form the team relationship for continuity of care Maintain an awareness of other OHSU resources to provide support and treatment for patients and their families. Dedicate admin time to work directly with medical assistants Required Qualifications 3-5 years nursing experience in the inpatient setting with a complex medical or surgical focus, or ambulatory clinic, or community-based setting working with chronically ill or medically complex patients Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) by 30 days before the start date Associate Degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire Current unencumbered Oregon RN license by 1 week before the start date Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
