The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and supporting production equipment and mechanical systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient manufacturing operations. This role performs preventive and corrective maintenance, responds to equipment breakdowns, and supports equipment installations, modifications, and continuous improvement initiatives within Thorne's regulated manufacturing environment.Working closely with Production, Engineering, Quality, and other Maintenance team members, the Maintenance Mechanic helps maximize equipment availability and minimize production interruptions while ensuring equipment remains in its designed and validated state. The ideal candidate is a skilled, safety-focused maintenance professional with strong mechanical troubleshooting abilities, hands-on manufacturing experience, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced cGMP environment.
Work Schedule: Monday–Wednesday | 5:00 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.
This position supports Thorne's overnight manufacturing and maintenance operations. The Maintenance Mechanic must be available to work the assigned 12-hour overnight schedule and additional hours or overtime as business needs require.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on production equipment and mechanical systems to maximize equipment reliability, availability, and operational performance.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, dismantle, repair, assemble, inspect, and test industrial machinery and production equipment.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns, mechanical issues, equipment adjustments, and changeovers to minimize production downtime.
- Perform preventive maintenance activities at established intervals and ensure assigned work is completed accurately and within required timelines.
- Maintain production equipment in its designed and validated state while completing work in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), safety standards, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Troubleshoot and maintain mechanical systems and equipment, including conveyors, gearboxes, feeders, mechanical drives, hammer mills, and other industrial manufacturing equipment.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals, blueprints, diagrams, sketches, technical documentation, and manufacturer specifications to support troubleshooting and repair activities.
- Accurately document maintenance activities, equipment conditions, parts usage, repairs, and work performed within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Maintain assigned production and equipment areas in a clean, safe, organized, and inspection-ready condition.
- Partner with Production, Engineering, and Quality to support equipment installations, modifications, qualifications, and manufacturing process improvements.
- Coordinate with contractors and external service providers performing equipment repairs, modifications, installations, or specialized maintenance.
- Support facility modifications, capacity expansion, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency projects as assigned.
- Assess non-routine equipment failures, determine appropriate troubleshooting actions, and escalate issues or recommend additional resources when necessary.
- Communicate equipment status, breakdown information, outstanding repairs, and shift-turnover requirements clearly to Maintenance leadership and other technicians.
- Prioritize maintenance requests based on production impact, safety, quality, and operational needs while coordinating priorities with Maintenance leadership when necessary.
- Support maintenance parts and inventory control by accurately tracking parts usage, returning unused materials, and maintaining appropriate work-order documentation.
- Maintain company tools, equipment, and assigned resources in safe and serviceable condition.
- Participate in off-schedule maintenance activities, including equipment breakdown response, shutdowns, overhauls, and overtime as business needs require.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintenance processes, safety, and operational efficiency and recommend practical solutions.
- Follow all required personal protective equipment (PPE), safety, cGMP, and departmental procedures while performing maintenance activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical degree, trade-school education, apprenticeship, or certificate in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years of manufacturing maintenance experience required .
- Previous maintenance experience within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, dietary supplement, food and beverage, or another cGMP-regulated manufacturing environment preferred.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining industrial production equipment and mechanical systems.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong working knowledge of industrial mechanical systems and equipment, including gearboxes, conveyors, feeders, mechanical drives, and related manufacturing machinery.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment, identify failure modes, determine root causes, and perform appropriate repairs.
- Ability to safely dismantle, repair, assemble, inspect, adjust, and test industrial machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, diagrams, technical specifications, and maintenance procedures.
- Working knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance practices and equipment reliability principles.
- Familiarity with cGMP, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), equipment validation requirements, and maintenance practices within a regulated manufacturing environment.
- Experience utilizing a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to receive work requests, document maintenance activities, track labor and parts, and close work orders.
- Basic computer proficiency, including email, electronic documentation, parts research, and standard business applications.
- Basic mathematical skills required to perform measurements, calculations, equipment adjustments, and other maintenance activities.
- Working knowledge of industrial safety practices, required PPE, and safe equipment maintenance procedures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

- Ability to work the assigned 12-hour overnight shift and move throughout manufacturing, maintenance, warehouse, and facility environments for extended periods, including additional hours or overtime as assigned.
- Ability to work in enclosed areas when required.
- Ability to wear required respiratory protection, including a half-mask or full-air respirator, for up to four hours at a time in accordance with Thorne's Respiratory Protection Program.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach overhead and to the side, and perform repetitive arm and hand movements while completing maintenance activities.
- Ability to safely operate, activate, prepare, repair, and clean industrial equipment and machinery, including tasks requiring forceful gripping and twisting wrist movements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees and supervisors and read equipment labels, technical documentation, diagrams, and small print.
- Ability to work safely in a moderate-noise manufacturing environment while wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move materials, tools, parts, or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds .
