Knowledgeable in sports regarding rules and regulations of school policy and WVSSAC Handbook. Immediate Supervisor(s): Principal, Athletic Director, Head Coach Supervises: Students, Assistant Coaches RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership and support in area of responsibility. Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility. Establishing good public and employee relations in area of responsibility. Maintaining professional work habits. Maintaining and upgrading professional skills. Evaluating personnel under supervision. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Leadership and support in area of responsibility: Be responsible for implementing the entire program and overall supervision of the program, including Junior Varsity and 9th grade teams. Direct assignments and duties of assistant coaches. Keep practice periods within realistic or predetermined time allotments. Maintain general maintenance and protection of equipment. Maintain regular contact and communication with the athletic director regarding program information. Maintain a complete inventory of equipment at the end of each season. Keep records as requested by the athletic director. Submit requisition of uniforms and equipment. Secure all facilities used upon completion of each practice. Prepare facilities for games and contests. Obtain all athlete physical exam reports after season start. Review grade point average on each athlete every six weeks; refer any below 2.0 to the athletic director. Be responsible for team conduct and emphasize safety precautions. Inform team of all school and athletic rules with emphasis on the Athletic Code of Conduct. Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility: Complete a self‑evaluation report at season end with recommendations. Implement a sportsmanship program. Ensure rules in WVSSAC Handbook are known and followed. Implement a health and welfare program for students, attending to injured or ill athletes fairly. Establish guidelines for appropriate dress on trips. Maintain safe playing area, showers, and locker rooms. Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner. Establishing good public and employee relations in area of responsibility: Develop sound relationships with school and community. Coordinate departure times for trips with principal. Implement home transportation plan for late‑evening returns. Post practice schedules for athletes and parents. Clarify athlete award policies. Maintain positive media relationships and promptly report scores. Maintaining professional work habits: Be punctual for contests and practices. Addres suggestions and constructive criticism positively. Work cooperatively with administration and staff. Maintain professional appearance. Conduct self and team ethically during contests and practice. Maintaining and upgrading professional skills: Accept and use new rules and regulations. Attend WVSSAC rules clinic. Engage in staff development, professional articles, advanced degrees, research, and associations. Evaluating personnel under supervision: Observe, document and assist in evaluating assistant coaches. Provide recommendations for improving coaching instruction. If a coach is away from classes for athletic events, it is the coach’s responsibility to ensure a covering teacher and appropriate learning situation. The principal shall approve the covering teacher and planned activity. If a coach cannot find coverage, the coach must not leave for that event. Each head coach must submit an itemized inventory and requisition list by the dates set by the athletic director. No hazing or initiation practices are allowed. The head coach of each sport is responsible for the entire program of that sport. ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION: A successful work history and a minimum of three supervisory references are required for consideration.
