Role Overview:

• Repair and maintain INDOT trucks, heavy equipment, snowplows, dump trucks, and other vehicles.

• Perform major and minor fixes on engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, fuel systems, exhaust, and suspensions.

• Diagnose engine problems and help with major overhauls on diesel and gasoline engines.

• Replace key components like pistons, rings, crankshafts, and both manual and automatic transmissions.

• Clean or replace diesel injectors.

• Repair or replace hydraulic systems and other mechanical parts.

• Install and fix snowplow blades and repair damaged plow assemblies.

• Make minor body repairs when needed.

• Use and maintain your own set of hand tools.

• Follow all INDOT safety, environmental, and operating procedures.

• Obtain a CDL within 90 days if you don't already have one (training and reimbursement provided).

Location:

This position is with INDOT’s Linton Sub-District.

Pay Rate:

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator ( to view the total compensation package.

Mechanic Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.

INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full-time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).

  • Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components.

  • Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.

  • Perform minor body repair work.

  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.

  • Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.

  • Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.

  • Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.

  • Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.

  • Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.

  • Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.

  • Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.

  • Order and/or pick up parts when required by the supervisor.

  • Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.

  • Coordinates work assigned by the Shop Foreman and reports problems as needed.

  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.

  • Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.

  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.

  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.

  • Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.

A degree is not required. However, at least a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) diploma and at least 1+ years of experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
