Job Title: Clinical Safety Officer - Paramedic (PRN / Variable Hour) Job Description
This PRN Clinical Safety Officer - Paramedic role focuses on safeguarding clinical trial participants in a research unit located in the suburbs of Overland Park, Kansas. The ideal candidate provides overnight and weekend coverage to support permanent staff, performing clinical safety activities in accordance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practices (GCP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This position follows a variable hour staffing model, where shifts are scheduled based on business needs and the employee's stated availability.
Responsibilities

• Oversee the safety and well-being of clinical trial participants throughout study conduct, with particular focus on overnight and weekend shifts.
• Perform continuous monitoring and safety assessments of participants, promptly identifying and responding to any changes in clinical status.
• Administer Investigational Product (IP) in accordance with study protocols and GCP guidelines.
• Perform catheter installation and related clinical procedures as required by the study protocol.
• Monitor, document, and follow up on participant adverse events, ensuring accurate and timely charting and reporting.
• Maintain and oversee the proper functioning and readiness of safety equipment within the clinical research unit.
• Respect and protect the confidentiality of clinical trial participants and study sponsors at all times.
• Continuously assess safety processes and procedures, identifying opportunities for improvement and communicating recommendations to departmental management.
• Assist with pre-screening of patients to determine eligibility for clinical trials.
• Support patient recruitment activities for clinical research studies, providing clear information and answering participant questions.
• Conduct chart reviews to verify participant information and ensure data accuracy and completeness.
• Execute all clinical trial activities in compliance with study protocols, GCP, and SOPs.
• Provide availability for at least four shifts per month, with each available shift being at least four hours in length.
• Communicate any changes in availability with at least one week's notice to the scheduling department whenever possible.
• If availability changes with less than one week's notice, proactively arrange coverage for any already assigned shifts and obtain approval from the appropriate supervisor before changes are finalized.
• Follow proper call-off procedures immediately in the event of unexpected unavailability due to vacation, illness, or family emergencies.
• Collaborate effectively with clinical and research staff to ensure smooth study conduct and participant safety.
• Adhere to all internal policies and procedures related to clinical research, safety, and documentation.

Essential Skills

• Current Paramedic licensure or certification appropriate for clinical practice in Kansas.
• Ability to work overnight shifts and overnight weekend shifts as needed to support the research unit.
• Capability to provide availability for at least four shifts per month, with each shift being a minimum of four hours.
• Strong clinical assessment skills to perform continuous monitoring and safety assessments of participants.
• Competence in administering medications, including Investigational Product (IP), following detailed protocols.
• Skill in performing catheter installation and related clinical procedures safely and accurately.
• Ability to monitor, document, and follow up on adverse events using clear, accurate clinical documentation.
• Understanding of and ability to work in compliance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practices (GCP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Strong attention to detail for chart review and documentation in a clinical research setting.
• Effective communication skills to coordinate with scheduling staff, supervisors, and clinical team members.
• Reliability and professionalism in following call-off procedures and managing schedule changes.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of participant and sponsor information.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred; online completion support is available if not already obtained.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred; online completion support is available if not already obtained.
• Interest in clinical research and willingness to learn clinical trial processes; no prior clinical research experience is required.
• Experience with patient pre-screening and recruitment is beneficial.
• Familiarity with chart review and medical record documentation is an advantage.
• Ability to identify and communicate safety improvement opportunities to management.
• Adaptability to fluctuating business needs and variable hour scheduling.
• Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-centered approach in a research environment.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical research unit located in the suburbs of Overland Park, Kansas. The work environment involves direct interaction with clinical trial participants in a controlled research setting, with a focus on overnight and weekend coverage. Shifts are variable and scheduled according to business needs and the employee's stated availability, with no guaranteed minimum hours. Work is performed under established study protocols, Good Clinical Practices (GCP), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), using standard clinical and safety equipment. The setting emphasizes collaboration with clinical and research staff, strict adherence to confidentiality, and consistent attention to participant safety. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a paramedic in a research unit is expected.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $33.00/hr.
