School Nurse

Under general direction, incumbent(s) provides health care to students and staff; dispenses medication; implements specialized health care protocols; responds to medical emergencies; treats accidents and illnesses; develops individualized health care plans for students and staff; trains staff about health care concerns, including those specifically related to medically fragile students; serves as a member of a management team to address the academic, social, psychological, and medical needs of individual students; supervises the school's health care team; performs health screenings; maintains health records; ensures immunizations are current; provides referral information to families; provides classes and information to students and families to promote wellness; and, networks with community agencies and other medical professionals.

Essential functions include organizing and maintaining health office and health records, administering daily medications and treatments, providing specialized health care services for accidents and illnesses, reporting daily attendance, administering medication and implementing specialized health care protocols, notifying and advising parents regarding health care issues, coordinating service for medically fragile students, consulting with principal on emergency situations, acting as a team member in management team meetings, providing and presenting training to students and staff on health issues, organizing and performing screening procedures, developing and implementing emergency protocols for technology dependent students, remaining current on health issues and changes in laws governing healthcare, and performing other duties of a similar nature or level.

Required qualifications include a current registered nurse license, two years of nursing experience, a current CPR certificate, and obtaining and maintaining a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).

Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in nursing, three years of school nursing experience, school nurse certification, and hearing screening training certificate.

Knowledge and skills required include applying health and safety laws and regulations, knowing childhood development, knowing health and safety issues concerning pediatrics, utilizing community referral services and agencies, applying screening techniques, assessing injuries and illnesses, treating injuries and illnesses within scope of training, administering specialized health care within a school setting, employing appropriate transfer and positioning procedures in moving medically fragile students, presenting educational materials, administering medications, maintaining paperwork and supplies in an organized manner, and engaging and encouraging communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc. to exchange information.

Physical requirements include standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking or hearing, tasting or smelling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, sitting, climbing or balancing, lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving more than 100 pounds, and specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working conditions include occasional exposure to outside weather conditions and a usually moderate noise level in the work environment.
