Description Overview The Heavy Equipment Mechanic must diagnose and repair small engine, light and heavy equipment on site. They will complete repairs on equipment enroute to or from the landfill to Transfer Station. Responsibilities First responder during natural disasters. Assist when clearing debris from roads to ensure safe passage for EMS, Police, Fire Dept, and other emergency vehicles. Respond to calls throughout the night Make necessary repairs to heavy equipment in attempts to keep operations from bogging down. Equipment responsible to repair is 18 Wheelers, roll off units, front loaders, back hoes, trammels, lawn tractors, pump etc Replace starters, water pumps, bearing hydraulic hoses, and tarping systems. Use proper methods to prevent stormwater contamination Communicates directives properly and ability to provide instructions to internal/ external customers Ensure each operator performs maintenance on their assigned equipment. Daily inspection for stress cracks and hydraulic leaks and tightening and greasing of rotating joints throughout the day Ensure a reasonable level of safer operations for self, the public and the environment Oversee the use of all safety equipment Ensure all employees follow guidelines set forth by the City’s policy on Safety Rules and Regulations Conduct waste screening due to frequency in which contact is made with hazardous chemicals Able to screen numerous types of rubble and brush due to the types of discarded household waste that comes through May be asked to perform other duties as assigned In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services. Position Type and Typical Hours of Work Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement Qualifications High School Diploma/ GED Two (2) years of experience Licenses and Certifications Required A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire Required within twelve (12) months of hire Class A CDL without restrictions or air brake endorsement Required within eighteen (18) months of hire Hazmat endorsement Employment Testing Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below: Criminal Background Check: Yes Physical Exam: Yes Basis of Rating A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information.
