Assistant Professor of Biology

Overview:

Mount Marty University, a Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts institution sponsored by the Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery, invites applications for a full-time, in-person, tenure-track position in Biology. Located in Yankton, South Dakota, Mount Marty seeks a broadly trained biologist who will serve as the primary faculty member for teaching human anatomy and physiology. Appointment is anticipated at the rank of Assistant Professor, though candidates with substantial prior academic experience may be considered for appointment at a higher rank.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching, the ability to teach across the biology curriculum, and sustained professional or scholarly activity that enriches classroom instruction.

MMU's biology professors serve biology majors, students preparing for pre-professional careers and students in the university's nursing program. The department also contributes substantially to the General Education program, so the successful candidate will teach students at a wide range of preparation levels and career intentions.

Mount Marty welcomes applications from candidates early in their academic careers. New faculty are supported by the university's Teaching and Learning Center, which provides mentoring, instructional design assistance, and ongoing development for colleagues new to the classroom. Key Responsibilities:

• Teach undergraduate courses in human anatomy and physiology, including the accompanying laboratory sections with an Anatomage table, as the primary teaching assignment for this position.
• Teach additional courses across the biology curriculum as departmental need requires, with microbiology and genetics as the most likely assignments.
• Contribute to the General Education program.
• Provide academic advising.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues in Biology and across the university to support mission integration in the curriculum.
• Contribute actively to the intellectual and communal life of the university through departmental and institutional service.

Qualifications:

• Education: An earned doctorate in Biology or a closely related field is preferred by the time of appointment. Candidates who are ABD will be considered provided all doctoral requirements are completed prior to the fall of 2027. Graduate preparation, research, or teaching emphasis in human anatomy and physiology is preferred.
• Commitment to Teaching: Prior experience as instructor of record for full-semester undergraduate biology courses with an accompanying laboratory is preferred, though not necessary. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to make rigorous biological content accessible and compelling to majors, pre-professional students, nursing students, and general education students alike.
• Professional and Scholarly Activity: Evidence of continuing scholarly work, professional practice, or applied engagement in the discipline appropriate to an undergraduate teaching institution, including the capacity to involve undergraduates in that work.
• Mission Alignment: Commitment in principle and practice to Mount Marty University's mission as a Catholic and Benedictine university rooted in the liberal arts.
• Benedictine Charism: Capacity to integrate Benedictine practices of hospitality, attentive listening, communal searching for truth, and the balance of work and prayer into teaching and academic citizenship.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire without current or future employer sponsorship. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check, verification of identity and unrestricted employment authorization as required by federal law, and the ability to be physically present on the Yankton campus by the position start date.
