TITLE: School Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's Degree in Education
• A valid Louisiana certificate in school counseling
• Three years of school experience
• Additional criteria as the Board may establish

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: None

JOB GOAL: To ensure the development of a program which provides students with maximum opportunities for growth and development. (Components will be used for School Counselor evaluation in conjunction with measures of student and school growth. Measures of student growth will be aligned with the DeSoto Parish Public School System's accountability measures as outlined in the Louisiana Accountability System.)

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborates with school administration in planning, designing and implementing the school counseling program.
• Provides counseling for students.
• Assists students in exploring career awareness and development.
• Maintains and interprets cumulative records on students.
• Assists in placement of students.
• Maintains an up-to-date file on community resources and refers students to appropriate service agencies.
• Actively seeks professional development opportunities in order to implement innovative approaches to counseling programs.
• Student advocate and member of system support teams.
• Plans, organizes and delivers the school counseling program.
• Collects and analyzes data.
• Monitors the students on a regular basis as they progress in school.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the proper authority.

• The counselor collaborates and communicates effectively and respectfully with colleagues and the community to promote growth and to accomplish the district's mission.
• The counselor maintains regular attendance and punctuality and notifies appropriate personnel of absences and late arrivals in a prompt manner, as per district procedures.
• The counselor complies with all district rules and policies.
• The counselor ensures proper care of supplies, electronics/computers and other equipment.
• The counselor maintains his/her assigned area and its environment in a manner conducive to a professional working environment.
• The counselor participates in activities to improve professional competence including activities required by board.
• The counselor oversees the maintenance of current records and reports as assigned.
• The counselor projects a well-groomed, professional appearance.
• The counselor supervises students at all times and timely assumes assigned duty posts at classroom door, during class, at lunch, during assemblies and prior to and/or at drop-off.
• The counselor accepts and implements assistance and resources designed to improve or enhance performance.

• The counselor maintains confidentiality of all matters related to student and employee matters.
• The counselor shall serve as a member on or chair committees as assigned by the principal or other supervisory personnel.
• The counselor shall attend student discipline, IEP, and SBLC meetings and the like as required by the principal or other supervisory personnel.
• The counselor shall attend job embedded professional development as scheduled by the principal or other supervisory personnel.
• The counselor shall attend followup meetings for feedback from formal and informal observations.
• The counselor shall attend faculty meetings as required by the principal or other supervisory personnel.
• The counselor shall attend back to school and/or open house events and student parent teacher conferences.
• The counselor shall serve duties for after school events.
• The counselor shall attend all meetings and functions of activities, clubs or groups of which employee is a sponsor.
• The counselor assumes additional duties, assignments, and responsibilities as the Principal or other supervisory personnel may assign.
• Reports job-related injuries within 48 hours of a work accident to the immediate supervisor.
• Adheres to the DeSoto Parish School Board's Sexual Harassment Policy to be found at File: GAEAA.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine and one-half or Ten months (Circle one)

EVALUATION: All certified and other professional personnel are evaluated in writing each year.
