SENIOR LIBRARY SPECIALIST

Position Overview Senior Library Specialist – Technical Services. This role oversees daily operations and maintenance of the Central Library Complex, supervises paid and volunteer staff, manages purchases, monitors operating costs, and performs paraprofessional support duties within assigned areas such as reception, circulation, or technical services. Responsibilities Supervise and oversee daily reception and circulation operations of the Central Library Complex Supervise paid and volunteer library clerks, building maintenance, and security staff Participate in hiring and training of new staff; schedule staff to meet operating requirements; perform performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions Monitor and maintain the automated conveyor belt check‑in system Authorize repairs as necessary; contact vendors and oversee quality of work; ensure safe operation of all equipment in the library Participate in the development of the library budget; monitor expenses on a regular basis and authorize procurements within established budgets and guidelines Closely monitor personnel and operating costs throughout the year; prepare multi‑year forecasts of capital outlay and equipment replacement, along with corresponding costs and justification Supervise and/or conduct educational programs Prepare promotional materials Assist library patrons with questions or library equipment Provide limited reference services Monitor building cleanliness and security Make recommendations for collection acquisitions; perform collection inventory Attend various community meetings and participate in special events to promote the library Maintain and report statistics concerning library usage Sort and shelve library materials Account for fines and fees collected and process donated materials Qualifications This promotional recruitment is only open to current “Regular” City of Huntington Beach employees. Employees who have not completed their INITIAL probationary period are not eligible. Education: An associate’s degree in library technical science or a related field; a bachelor’s degree in English literature or a related field is preferred. Experience: Two (2) years of library clerical support or related experience. Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required at the time of appointment and throughout employment. Special Conditions: Employees regularly assigned/required to drive a city or personal vehicle in the course and scope of work shall be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice program.
