Shipping and Receiving Associate

This role is responsible for end-to-end shipping and receiving of products in a warehouse environment. The position focuses primarily on packing and shipping customer orders, working with major carriers, preparing documentation, and maintaining accurate inventory of shipping supplies. Approximately 75% of the role involves shipping activities, with the remaining time dedicated to receiving and related logistics tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Pack, seal, and label customer orders to prepare them for shipment in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepare shipping documents, such as bills of lading and commercial invoices, to properly route packages.
  • Work with major carriers, including FedEx and UPS, to process shipments and ensure on-time delivery.
  • Identify and implement packing best practices to minimize damage to shipped goods and improve efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments to resolve issues related to package deliveries or shipments.
  • Inspect boxes and shipments for visible damage and record any damages or short shipments as required.
  • Examine shipment contents and compare them with manifests, invoices, or orders to verify accuracy.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of all shipping supplies to ensure adequate stock levels.
  • Store materials properly to conserve space and comply with safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Ensure the physical condition of the shipping area and equipment is properly maintained and safe.
  • Perform all work in compliance with established quality and safety systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Handle receiving activities, including unloading, checking, and organizing incoming materials.
  • Support general warehouse operations, including picking, packing, and material handling as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 1–2 years of packing and shipping experience.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of receiving experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of combined shipping and receiving experience in a warehouse environment.
  • At least 2 years of relative work experience in a similar logistics, shipping, or warehouse role.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume shipping environment.
  • Ability to work with computers and basic computer skills.
  • Experience using or familiarity with ERP systems.
  • Experience working with carriers such as FedEx and UPS; DHL experience is a plus.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs as part of daily duties.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail when verifying shipment contents against manifests, invoices, or orders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a high-volume environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with FedEx Shipping Manager software is preferred.
  • Experience with UPS WorldShip software is preferred.
  • Experience with logistics, inventory, shipping and receiving, picking, packing, and material handling.
  • Experience using SAP or similar enterprise systems is a plus.
  • Prior experience in an ITAR-regulated facility is beneficial.
  • Status must comply with ITAR regulations.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain shipping supplies and warehouse orderliness.

Work Environment

The role is based in a warehouse environment focused on shipping, receiving, and general logistics operations. You will work primarily on a first shift schedule, with hours from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The position involves regular physical activity, including lifting up to 30 lbs, moving materials, and standing or walking for extended periods. You will use computers, ERP systems, and shipping software tools such as FedEx Shipping Manager and UPS WorldShip to process orders and documentation. The warehouse operates under established quality and safety systems, including ITAR-related requirements, and follows clear procedures for storage, packing, and handling materials. The dress code is casual and practical, typically jeans or shorts, a plain shirt, and closed-toe shoes suitable for a warehouse setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Gaithersburg, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
