Position Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and according to established practices and procedures, the PCA (aka CNA) facilitates the provision of patient care by performing specific tasks and support functions as delegated by the RN or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Job Responsibilities

Facilitates the provision of patient care under the direction of the Staff RN or LPN.

Patient Care Skills: provides basic care to patients under the guidelines set forth according to hospital policies and procedures.
Feeds or assists in feeding patients as necessary or required.
Records food and fluid intake and output as directed.
Performs 12-lead EKG following the Cardiodiagnostics department policies and procedures.
Turns conscious and unconscious patients.
Performs basic hygiene and reports skin condition, does partial/complete bed baths, dressing and/or changing patient garments.
Takes and records vital signs as assigned on your unit.
Changes linens on an occupied and unoccupied bed.
Shaves male patients, and performs oral hygiene, denture care/use of WaterPik, shampoos hair, and places patient on bedpan/urinal and emptying.
Performs CPR when necessary.
Performs I&O by calculating intake and measuring outputs, which may include urinary, hemovacs, JPs, NG canisters and ostomy bags.
Performs glucose testing on adults by using Glucometer.
Weights patients using a standing scale and/or bed scale.
Provides urological care by observing and reporting urine for color/character.
Performs Foley care on female/male patient, obtains urine specimens from Foleys, and collects 24-hour specimens.
Provides wound care by observing incisions and drainage, changes simple/brief dressings.
Provides post-operative care, frequent vital signs/observations, turn-cough and deep breathing under the direction of a nurse
Applies cooling blankets, PAS stockings, regular TED hose, and SCD's
Performs postmortem care as directed.

Education/Experience

High school graduation or equivalency. Or must have completed a Nursing Assistant program and be a senior in high school.
Completion of an approved nurse aide training course required or one semester of a clinical nursing course.
Current BLS provider
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform required competencies (skills) within allotted time frames.
Provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served
Demonstrate knowledge and principles of growth and development over the life span.
Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to the patient's age-specific needs.
Provide the care needed as described in the unit/department policies and procedures
