Position Overview
The obstetrics RN provides direct nursing care for pregnant individuals across prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum stages. The role involves monitoring maternal and fetal status, administering medications, and supporting families throughout the perinatal period.
Care is delivered in hospital labor and delivery units or obstetric clinics, with emphasis on safety, patient education, and collaborative care.
Responsibilities
- Monitor maternal and fetal status during prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods
- Assist with labor and delivery, including assessments and interventions as ordered
- Administer medications, including analgesia and monitoring for potential complications
- Provide patient and family education on pregnancy, labor, newborn care, and postpartum adjustments
- Document in the electronic medical record and communicate changes to the care team
- Collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, and other specialists
- Respond to obstetric emergencies and coordinate rapid response when needed
Qualifications
Education:
Diploma, Associate, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Licensure:
Current registered nurse (RN) license in the practicing state
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS); Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) recommended
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or obstetric-specific certifications preferred
Experience or Skills:
Experience in obstetric care, labor support, and newborn care; strong communication and ability to work in high-acuity settings
Experience
- 2+ years of obstetric nursing experience
- Experience in hospital labor and delivery units or high-risk obstetric settings
Preferred
- Experience with high-risk obstetrics and neonatal care
- Additional perinatal certifications
Work Environment
Hospital-based obstetric unit with rotating shifts, including on-call coverage for laboring patients. Documentation occurs in the EMR with multidisciplinary teamwork.
Fast-paced, high-stakes environment requiring quick decision-making and effective communication with families and the care team.
