Chemical Tanker Driver Trainer - Part Time

Location: Hammond, IN Workplace: On-Site / Field-Based
Altom Transport is a family-owned carrier built on trust, safety, and service. With operations across 49 states and Canada, we specialize in the safe transportation of bulk liquid chemicals and petroleum products.
Safety is at the core of everything we doand that starts with how we train our drivers.
Key Responsibilities
- Train and mentor new CDL drivers on safe tanker operations (chemical & petroleum)
- Conduct ride-alongs and on-the-road evaluations
- Instruct proper loading/unloading procedures, including pumps, hoses, and valves
- Reinforce hazmat handling, spill response, and PPE protocols
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, EPA, and customer-specific requirements
- Evaluate driver readiness and provide clear pass/fail recommendations
- Coach drivers on defensive driving, situational awareness, and risk mitigation
- Assist with refresher training and remediation for current drivers when needed
- Maintain accurate training documentation and evaluations
- Communicate closely with Safety and Operations teams
Schedule & Flexibility
- Part-time, flexible schedule based on training needs
- Mix of local and regional travel for ride-alongs
- Ideal for experienced drivers looking to step into a mentorship role
Qualifications & Experience
- Valid Class A CDL with X Endorsement (Hazmat & Tanker)
- 5+ years of chemical or liquid tanker experience (preferred for trainer role)
- Strong safety record and clean MVR
- Prior driver training or mentorship experience strongly preferred
- Deep understanding of:
- Bulk liquid surge and handling
- Chemical compatibility & safety procedures
- Loading/unloading at plants and terminals
- Strong communication and coaching ability (this is not just drivingit's teaching)
- Ability to evaluate drivers objectively and enforce standards
