Position Overview Role: Assistant Professor of Special Education Department: Lurie College of Education / Department of Special Education Target Start Date: August 17, 2026 Application Deadline: December 20, 2025 (applications accepted until filled or closed) Compensation and Benefits Annual Salary: $90,000 – $100,000, commensurate with qualifications, experience and rank according to the CSU Salary Schedule About the Department The Department of Special Education at San José State University prepares transformative special educators. The Master’s in Special Education and three Education Specialist credential programs are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Candidates will have opportunities to work with students of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, including those with mild to moderate disabilities who are multilingual. Required Qualifications PhD or EdD in Special Education or a related field Demonstrated potential for research and scholarly writing Awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population Preferred Qualifications Minimum of three years of public school teaching with students with mild to moderate disabilities, including emerging bilinguals Interest in supporting teacher candidates earning a bilingual authorization and in supervising in bilingual settings across SPED and TED programs Interest in preparing teacher candidates to use AI and emerging technologies in teaching and scholarship Interest in teaching and/or advising dissertations for doctoral students in the Lurie College EdD program Strong potential for research and scholarly work evidenced by publications, grant proposals, or conference presentations Key Responsibilities Teach a range of courses for Master’s, credential, and undergraduate students Maintain an active scholarly agenda required for tenure and promotion Provide service to the department through advising, curriculum development, assessment, accreditation, recruitment, and other tasks Participate in shared governance at departmental, college, and university levels Organize courses within Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) Demonstrate awareness of diverse student needs and develop inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement Other Duties Compliance with CSU systemwide policies, including Clery Act training, federal and state reporting, and mandatory reporter responsibilities. Faculty must complete required training (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Title IX, Health and Safety).
