2026 Breakthrough Summerbridge Instructional Coach Breakthrough Summerbridge, founded in 1978 at San Francisco University High School (UHS), offers a tuition‑free year‑round intensive academic enrichment program. The program serves middle‑school students from under‑resourced circumstances, provides intensive summer teaching internships for high‑school and college students, and transforms lives through its relationship with UHS communities. Subjects: Humanities, Math, Science Compensation: $5,692 stipend for first‑time ICs, with increases for returning ICs based on years at BTSB. About the Role Instructional Coaches (ICs) are experienced educators who provide content‑specific support and mentoring for Breakthrough Summerbridge’s Teaching Fellows (TFs). ICs set the level of academic rigor through interactions with TFs, approval of lesson plans, and feedback on classroom observations. Each IC supervises two Teaching Fellows in one subject area and grade level, leads and participates in professional development workshops, contributes to grade‑level PLCs, observes classes, evaluates lesson plans, and meets frequently with individual TFs. ICs also plan and lead a weekly teaching team meeting. Instructional Coach Duties and Commitment Program Dates: June 8 – July 31, 2026 Pre‑summer Attend pre‑summer IC training session on Saturday, May 2, from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at UHS. Complete pre‑summer curriculum planning, as assigned. Consult with BTSB administrative staff regarding curriculum. Refine existing unit plans in the specific content area, as needed. Conference with program staff to plan teacher orientation workshops. Orientation Week – June 8 – June 16, 2026 Attend, participate in, and lead orientation week workshops. Facilitate or co‑facilitate teacher training workshops on topics such as classroom management, lesson planning, DEI, and teaching practices specific to the content area. Guide TFs through lesson planning and general preparation for the summer. Become familiar with the Breakthrough Teacher Rubric (BTR). Plan and lead a teaching team meeting. Six‑Week Summer Program – June 17 – July 24, 2026 Review lesson plans and provide actionable feedback. Maintain a big‑picture understanding of the curriculum and guide TFs as needed. Observe Teaching Fellows in the classroom as part of the daily IC Observation Schedule. Conduct at least one weekly growth conference with each TF, providing concrete feedback on lessons and classroom experience. Plan and lead teaching team meetings, once per week. Plan and lead weekly grade‑level PLC meetings. Participate in weekly check‑ins with the Director of Programming and Instruction and other ICs. Complete TF rubric for each assigned TF weekly to monitor growth in TF competencies. Work with the IC team to determine professional development needs for TFs and lead at least one professional development session. Communicate regularly with BTSB Director of Programming and Instruction regarding TF progress. Ensure assigned TFs complete their Student Evaluation reports according to BTSB guidelines. Engage fully in the Breakthrough Summerbridge community. Substitute teach as needed in the case of TF absence. Supervise snack and/or lunch on a rotating schedule. Collaborate with colleagues in a challenging, fun, and supportive environment. Work with a diverse group of highly motivated students, staff, and teachers. Learn how to receive and deliver actionable feedback. Additionally, two ICs will supervise “Makeup Days” on Friday mornings and receive additional compensation. Wrap Up Week – July 27 – July 31, 2026 Submit a final evaluation of each assigned TF to the SB Admin Team. Write an end‑of‑summer letter highlighting strengths and growth areas for each TF. Host final growth conferences with each TF to review the final evaluation and end‑of‑summer letter. Oversee and support TFs in completing end‑of‑summer deliverables, including Celebration presentations and student evaluations. Create a curriculum map with TFs to provide revisions and suggestions on next summer’s curriculum. Evaluate the overall summer program in an Exit Interview and feedback surveys. On‑Campus Hours Orientation Days – Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Student Programming Days – Instructional Coaches work in person Monday – Thursday: Monday and Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; these hours extend until 1:15 p.m. when assigned lunch supervision. Wrap‑Up week – Monday and Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (remote); Wednesday evening for Celebration; Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Mandatory special dates/late evenings First two weeks of programming – ICs stay until 2:20 p.m. on some days to support grade‑level Study Hall. Back to Summerbridge Night – June 24, 2026 (late evening). Celebration – July 29, 2026 (late evening). Holidays Juneteenth Holiday – June 19, 2026. Independence Day Holiday – July 3, 2026. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Outstanding track record as a professional teacher for at least three years (preferably in grades 6‑12). Outstanding knowledge of subject matter and broad knowledge of available resources. Ability to deliver positive, constructive, and honest feedback, both written and verbal. Experience with curriculum development and implementation. Superior presentation, writing, and organizational skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to hold others to high standards while also offering support and maintaining positive relationships.
