Guidance Counselor (Alcalde .4 FTE /ETS .6 FTE)

Espanola Public Schools

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Properly certified in Counseling;
  1. Preferably, counseling and/or teaching experience;
  1. Other qualifications determined to be necessary by the Board.
REPORTS TO: Principal(s)/Director(s) (Bilingual-Federal-Special Programs)


GENERAL SUPERVISOR: Superintendent.


JOB GOAL: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :
  1. Develop and implement a Guidance and Counseling Program for grades Kindergarten through 12th and meet required timelines and adhere to School Board Policies and State Board Regulations. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Assist students in selecting courses and evaluating their plan programs, aptitudes abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Implements and maintains the EPSS, provide input on performance standards/assessments, administer, and coordinate all school testing program(s), to include: ordering and shipping of materials, New Mexico Portfolio Assessment, New Mexico High School Competency Examination, New Mexico Achievement Assessment, Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills, New Mexico Reading Assessment, interprets test data (Elementary, Middle and High School).
  1. Assist the principal or designee with the Master Teaching Schedule by providing necessary input based on student and curriculum needs. (Elementary, Middle and High School).
  1. Work with the Principal/Teacher and attempts to resolve students; educational problems such as: attendance, tardiness, truancy, etc. (Elementary, Middle and High School).
  1. Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and school's varied opportunities for learning. (Elementary, Middle and High School).
  1. Work with Juvenile Probation Officer in preventing students from dropping out of school due to truancy. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Implement Career Education by assisting students in evaluating career interests and choices to include Armed Services, (applicable to High School)
  1. Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will assist each student in increasing his/her personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity. (Elementary, Middle and High school)
  1. Work with students on an individual basis on the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Interact with students who are having difficulty coping with self-esteem, emotional problems, home situations, peer groups, school environment, cultural identity and behavioral problems. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Plan guidance trips to colleges and industry for interested students as part of Career and College Day. (applicable only to Middle School and High School)
  1. Interpret the guidance and counseling program to the community and encourages students to participate in school and community activities. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality, initiate, assemble, maintain and interpret accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records and uniform transcript records for students. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Verify that student grades are recorded in the cumulative records, (applicable only to Middle and High School).
  1. Supervise the preparation and processing of college applications and scholarships. Assist with financial aid applications and employment applications (applicable only to Middle and High School).
  1. Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships (applicable only to Middle and High School).
  1. Provide student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records (applicable only to Middle and High School).
  1. Confer with parents as the need arises or upon receiving a referral and participate in the development of a Parent Involvement Plan and Safety Plan. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Adhere to competencies for Counselor and establish Mental Health Partnerships; Example: St. Francis Academy, Las Clinicas Del Norte, etc. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Provide in-service training in Guidance/Counseling, student behavior, peer counseling, character counts, and discipline techniques for teachers. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered b y the Guidance/Counseling Department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Advise administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Take an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Implement a counseling substance abuse intervention component for those students who need help with substance abuse related problems. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Organize and conduct annual "Career Day" and "College Day" (applicable only to Middle and High School).
  1. Annually conduct a prior year annual graduate follow-up study, (applicable to High School)
  1. Serve in the Student Assessment Team and/or General Screening Committee to ensure that academic gains are maintained by exploring alternative instructional methodologies, materials and teaching techniques. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Assist in determining the student's special abilities or needs and refer for a formal educational evaluation. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Serve as a direct liaison contact among students, teachers, parents, the school nurse, the health clinic and other beneficial service agencies. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Maintain a record/log of all student/teacher/parent service agencies/administrators contact. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Log all out-going long distance telephone calls and fax transmittals. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Review and monitor telephone bills of assigned department and staff and compare with telephone logs for accountability purposes. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Be an active member to the IEP Special Education Committee(s) developing/modifying IEP's, performance standards/assessments committee and must attend all scheduled meetings. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Assist in proposal writing for new grant monies. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Responsible to recognize students who are eligible for the Junior and Senior Honor Society, (applicable to Middle and High School)
  1. Implement and oversee the entry of data through the Accountability Data System/Visions. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Assist principal(s) in gathering, disaggregating entering, graphing, interpreting data, analyzing assessments and participating in curriculum development or modifications. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Assist principal(s) in developing interventions/strategies for school and student improvement and participate in the development of Assertive Discipline Plan(s). (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Participate in filling out Time Study for Medicaid reimbursement. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Provide principals and Directors with information applicable to SDE, NCA and/or office of Civil rights Reports, inclusive of Drop Out Rate, Attendance, Surveys, Safety Plans, Accountability Reports, etc. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Provide principals and directors with narrative applicable to initiated activities required by funding sources. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Serve as a Test Coordinator and implement test security measures. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Attend board meetings at the request of the Superintendent. (Elementary, Middle and High School)
  1. Perform other assigned tasks required of the supervisor(s). (Elementary, Middle and High School)

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:


Term of employment to be established by the Board of Education on an annual basis, through the adoption of the School Calendar.


SALARY:


Salary to be established on an annual basis, through the adoption of Salary Schedules.


EVALUATION:


Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:


Twelve-month year. Eight (8) hours daily. Salary to be determined according to salary schedule.
