Swim Instructor

The Astoria Aquatic Center is currently accepting applications for Swim Instructors for the Fall/Winter season. We are looking for reliable individuals who can commit to a regular schedule, with availability to work a minimum of two days per week. SUMMARY Swim Instructors teach children of various ages and skill levels, helping them build confidence, improve technique, and enjoy the water in a safe and supportive environment. In addition, Swim Instructors support facility operations by promoting water safety, monitoring patrons, enforcing safety rules, preventing and responding to emergencies, providing first aid and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility. Individuals without prior experience will begin as a Swim Instructor 1 will receive hands-on training alongside experienced Swim Instructors to learn how to effectively lead classes, develop and follow lesson plans, engage with participants and communicate progress with parents or guardians. In this role, individuals are expected to gain the skills needed to independently manage classes, understand the criteria for each swim level and successfully complete all required training before advancing to Level 2 Swim Instructor position. SCHEDULE Swim Instructors work part-time and are scheduled based on their availability and the staffing needs of the facility. We are looking for swim instructors available to work at least two days per week. Part-time positions with the City are limited to working no more than 129 hours per month. Shifts Tuesdays & Thursdays: Evenings: 3:30 PM-6:45 PM Saturdays: Mornings: 9:00 AM-11:00 AM *It is possible that we may add swimming lessons on Wednesdays and Fridays. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs water safety and learn to swim instructional activities, while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Manager and in coordination with the Recreation Coordinator and Head Lifeguards. Teaches skills and strokes according to the performance standards for each level. Encourages and helps foster an environment which promotes water safety, learning in a positive and fun manner and encourages students to become lifelong swimmers. Prepares instructional objectives and lesson plans for each class. Follows outlined guidelines for each class/level. Adapts teaching approaches to the age, experience, and ability of participants. Provide positive and productive communication to parents regarding their children's progress at least three times throughout the course of the swim session. Completes records and reports as needed. Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations. Possesses a basic knowledge of facility's emergency action plan and understands the secondary role their position is expected to perform in an emergency. Demonstrates understanding of and adheres to all safety regulations and practices. Proactively and frequently participates in facility cleaning. Including but not limited to; sweeping, mopping and sanitizing floors, wiping down and sanitizing surfaces, taking out the garbage, picking up debris, cleaning restrooms, laundering hand towels and lost and found items, etc. Displays excellent communication skills required in working with coworkers and patrons including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure Attends scheduled trainings. Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance and adheres to the published schedule for shift times and dates. Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows dress code protocol where assigned. Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation. Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor. Follows all safety rules and procedures established for various work areas. Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Ability to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to safety or health of employee or others. Possession of a valid Swim Instructor certification or the ability to pass city-provided Swim Instructor training. Possession of valid CPR & First Aid certification or the ability to pass city-provided CPR & First Aid training. Ability to physically perform all skills required of a Swim Instructor. Ability to pass a City background check including checks of Criminal, Social Security Trace and Sex Offender Registry records. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Prior swim instructor or lifeguard experience. Previous experience working with children and young adults. Prior experience working with the public. WORK ENVIRONMENT Employees must be able to physically perform all duties of the Swim Instructor role which includes standing, sitting, walking, lifting, reaching, bending, climbing, balancing, kneeling and crouching. Occasionally lifting and moving up to 50 pounds is required and includes the ability to assist conscious and unconscious patrons in distress out of the water and on the deck including use of a backboard. Employees are required to communicate verbally, follow instructions and protocols and hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility or in the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and fumes or airborne particles (Chlorine). #J-18808-Ljbffr
