Asphalt Plant Laborer

Job Summary/Objective The Asphalt Plant Laborer performs physical labor tasks at the asphalt plant, handling materials and supplies, operating hand and power tools, and keeping plant equipment and work areas clean and organized. This role supports plant maintenance and production activities and must be able to perform assigned duties in extreme weather conditions. CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Plant Foreman DEPARTMENT: Asphalt Plant Operations Job Summary/Objective The Asphalt Plant Laborer performs physical labor tasks at the asphalt plant, handling materials and supplies, operating hand and power tools, and keeping plant equipment and work areas clean and organized. This role supports plant maintenance and production activities and must be able to perform assigned duties in extreme weather conditions. Essential Functions General Labor Support - Perform physical labor tasks at the asphalt plant in support of plant and production operations. Material Handling - Handle, load, and move raw materials, supplies, and finished product as directed. Plant & Equipment Cleanup - Clean plant equipment, work areas, and facilities, and clean up spilled materials, debris, and waste. Tool & Equipment Use - Operate hand and power tools as directed to support plant maintenance and production tasks. Maintenance Assistance - Assist maintenance personnel with routine upkeep of plant equipment and machinery. Safety & Environmental Compliance - Follow all company safety policies and procedures, and applicable environmental and safety regulations. Traffic & Truck Support - Assist with directing trucks and other traffic within the plant yard as needed. Weather Adaptability - Perform assigned duties in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitation. General Support - Perform other duties as assigned that are necessary to support plant operations. Qualifications Asphalt or construction labor experience preferred but not required. Ability to safely and effectively operate hand and power tools. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and physically demanding environments. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and plant safety procedures. High school diploma or GED helpful but not required. Multilimbed Coordination - The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while the whole body is in motion. Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position. Static Strength - The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY This position has no supervisory responsibility. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in and around an active asphalt plant, and is exposed to hot-mix asphalt (temperatures exceeding 250°F), moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. The employee works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to heat, humidity, and other varying weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, and use hands to handle tools, materials, and equipment. The employee frequently performs manual labor, including lifting, carrying, and climbing on and around plant structures and equipment, and occasionally lifts and moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Days and hours of work vary based on the plant's production schedule, weather, and production needs, and may include early mornings, extended shifts, and occasional nights or weekends, particularly during peak paving season. TRAVEL This position requires minimal travel and is primarily based at the assigned asphalt plant although ability to work at all Dunn plants is necessary.
