It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences The Accounting Technician II is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Duties of this position are to monitor and control all institutional expenditures and assist the Administrative Officer III in performing all fiscal transactions at Maury Correctional Institution. Maintains general ledger which will include pertinent budget information for all purchase orders, requisitions and contracts, so that current amounts expended and encumbered by line item can be accessed as needed. This position monitors balances and controls the institutional budget. He/she will be required to reconcile the budget. This position deals frequently with institutional staff, particularly institutional management from the Custody and Programs sections for the processing of purchase orders, contracts as well as backup to Inmate Trust Fund and incentive wage. This position is also responsible for negotiating contracts with various suppliers and service providers, endeavoring to get the best prices and terms for the State. This position monitors all Welfare expenditures, expense vouchers, telephone bills, contracts. This position helps in annual, expansion and emergency budget preparation and projects expenditure requirements over various time periods. This position produces comparative and statistical information for the Administrative Officer III to use in reporting to his/her supervisors and for use in management decisions. Must be able to work independently and meet constant deadlines while performing several tasks simultaneously. Salary Range: $35,596 - $62,294 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. About the Division of Institutions The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
