School Vehicle Mechanic

PRIMARY FUNCTION: To service and perform repairs to school system vehicles to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.

PAY GRADE: Classified Salary Schedule - 231 Day- Grade 8 - Salary Range: $35,985.00 to $58,155.00. Salary placement will be based on Douglas County Board of Education approved salary schedules and years of verified relevant experience.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 231 Days (12 Months)

REPORT TO: Fleet Manager

EDUCATION LEVEL: High School graduate or GED preferred or equivalent experience and/or training.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Georgia CDL license (P and S Endorsements), or must be obtained at first training opportunity. Must pass an initial drug (alcohol) screening. Must pass a pre-employment screening, including an HPE (Health Performance Evaluation).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

PROFICIENT SKILLS: Completion of a two year mechanic training program or equal experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Demonstrate regular attendance and is punctual.
• Inspect, test, and road check to determine cause of problems and make mechanical repairs, such as maintaining and repairing electrical circuits, engines, transmissions, differentials, gears and drive shafts, hydraulic systems, air systems, brakes, etc.
• Perform regular preventive maintenance on school system vehicles and equipment such as engine tune-ups; lubrication; tire rotation, repair or replacement; oil filters; fuses; and similar maintenance actions.
• Maintain a safe, clean and orderly work environment.
• Operate school system vehicles and equipment.
• Operate a two-way radio and communicate with drivers.
• Be on call 24 hours a day in vehicle or weather emergencies.
• Participate in in-service training to maintain and upgrade skills.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
• Model and maintain ethical standards.
• Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
• Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignments.
• Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
• Exhibit interpersonal skills as an effective team member.
• Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
• Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential or opportunities for improvement.
• Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
• Maintain tools and equipment in a safe condition and in good working order.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, fellow workers and other contact.
• Inspect buses and cars to recommend corrective action as needed.
• Perform minor repairs to vehicles as assigned.
• Perform emergency road repairs.
• Test-drive vehicles to ensure they are in safe operating condition.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
