Assistant Manager - Residential Dining Services

Job Description Position Summary: The Assistant Manager oversees daily operations at a university residential dining facility. This role includes supervising full- and part-time staff through scheduling, training, coaching, and performance evaluation. Additionally, the Assistant Manager is responsible for procuring food and supplies, maintaining meal quality and quantity, managing food costs, receiving deliveries, and ensuring safety, sanitation, and accident prevention are prioritized. Description of Work Unit: Residential Dining Services’ (RDS) mission is to deliver an outstanding dining experience crafted by an engaged team dedicated to social and environmental responsibility. RDS operates 5 dining centers, 2 convenience stores, a full bakeshop, and a warehouse. We employee more than 1,000 employees who serve 12,000 meals per day to the 6,000 students who live on campus. Essential Job Duties: Supervise full- and part-time employees, including delegating assignments, scheduling, conducting training, evaluating performance, issuing discipline, and mediating differences. Interview full- and part-time applicants and assist with hiring decisions. Ensure all front-of-house customer-facing visual standards are met, including cleanliness and organization of the dining room, food presentation, and accurate signage. Order and inventory food and supplies to maintain accurate inventory levels. Attend and successfully complete training sessions, including ServSafe Manager Certification, sexual harassment, food allergies, and new employee onboarding. Conditions of Employment: Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires). Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare. Special Requirements/Other: Per the CSU HDS food safety training policy, the incumbent must successfully pass the ServSafe certification exam within 6 months of hire date. Supervision: Lead Cook 2 Cooks 12 Temporary employees Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Required Degree: High School Diploma or GED Minimum Years of Experience and/or Skills: Five years of foodservice experience that includes at least one year of supervisory experience. Preferred Qualifications: Associate or bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, culinary arts, business, or related field. Four years or more of supervisory experience. Work experience in a complex high-volume (500+ meals per day) food production operation. Experience working in a university environment. Experience with ordering and inventory systems.
