CNC 5-Axis Machinist

Job Summary:

Operates and sets up computerized numerical control (CNC) machines for vertical and horizontal 5-Axis machining in Lapeer, MI. Performs a variety of functions including surfacing, profiling, boring, facing, and threading on metallic workpieces such as castings, weldments, and forgings.

Essential Functions:

• Plans machining tasks by analyzing work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, and specifications; interprets geometric dimensions and tolerances.
• Utilizes Mastercam to program 5-Axis CNC machines.
• Sets up machines by adjusting tools, offsets, and compensation; calculates tooling requirements; conducts part programs and tooling inspections.
• Verifies setups by measuring head clearance, machine travel, and positions; checks first-run parts for accuracy.
• Monitors machining operations, troubleshoots issues, and ensures adherence to quality standards.
• Maintains safe operations by following safety procedures and regulations.
• Conducts preventive maintenance on equipment and troubleshoots malfunctions; coordinates with repair technicians when needed.
• Documents work actions and communicates with relevant departments as required.
• Updates job knowledge through educational opportunities and contributes to organizational goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Experience with Mastercam for a minimum of 2 years.
• Minimum 5 years of experience with various 5-Axis machining applications.
• Familiarity with Heidenhain and Fidia controls preferred.
• General understanding of QMS and 5S practices.
• Basic knowledge of fixturing and crane operation (preferred).
• Strong mathematical skills and ability to interpret technical drawings.
• Ability to problem-solve and work independently with high accuracy.
• Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with team members.
• High school diploma or equivalent, with at least five years of CNC machining experience.

Background Prerequisites:

• Must pass company background check, reference checks, and controlled substance testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with crane operations.
• Knowledge of AS9100 and IS14001 standards.
• Understanding of Environmental Management.
