Job Description: I. Position Summary: The Assistant Scientist II is a specialized research scientist with an advanced degree (PhD and/or MD) and demonstrated expertise in aging research, including the development and validation of biomarkers of aging, management of large clinical and research databases, and the application of artificial intelligence in aging research. The individual will serve as a member of the Musculoskeletal Research Center at the Marcus Institute, but will work frequently across centers and programs. He/She will be expected to develop an independent research program through the successful acquisition of competitive research funding from the National Institute on Health (NIH), foundations, the biotech industry, and other funding organizations. The candidate will lead and effectively manage ongoing research projects, present research findings at scientific meetings, and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals to advance the research in aging and age-related conditions. II. Core Competencies: Managing Complexity: Uses experience, knowledge and training to manage effectively in increasingly difficult and ambiguous situations, making the best decisions possible at the time. Teamwork and Collaboration: Works effectively within a team, group and across the organization and accomplishes tasks and desired results while behaving constructively as opposed to separately and competitively. III. Position Responsibilities: Secure and maintain 1-2 NIH grants as Principal Investigator and participate as a coinvestigator on collaborative grants, as well as obtain funding from additional sources focused on aging research. Develop and validate clinically relevant biomarkers and evaluate their applicability to aging research and geriatric care through clinical and translational research. Present research findings at scientific conferences and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Conduct peer-review of manuscripts for high-ranking journals within the candidate’s area of expertise. Mentor trainees, participate in teaching activities, and serve on local and national committees. Develop and manage large scale integrated cohort databases that harmonize data from multiple sources to advance aging research initiatives. Contribute to the creation of Hebrew SeniorLife’s “Learning Health Care System” by integrating research, administrative, operational, housing, financial and clinical data from across the organization and beyond into a valuable “data lake.” Contribute to the creation of appropriate cloud computing work flows to analyze “big data” from omics and electronic health records Develop and implement artificial intelligence algorithms for applications across Marcus Institute research programs, clinical innovations, and operational initiatives. Assist with integration of biologic and physiologic measures into the longitudinal Healthy Aging Initiative, including measures derived from blood, tissue samples, wearable devices, provocative testing, and electronic medical records. Build productive and lucrative relationships with biotechnology companies and other industry partners to diversify institutional and investigator funding opportunities. Participate actively in Marcus Institute activities and collaborate with faculty members at the Marcus Institute, Harvard University, and other academic and research institutions. The above covers the most significant responsibilities of the position. It does not, however, exclude other duties, which would be in conformity with the level of the position. Completes special projects as assigned. IV Qualifications PhD and/or MD with demonstrated research experience in biomarkers of aging, development and management of large clinical/research databases and application of artificial intelligence to aging research. Demonstrated expertise in aging research, including experience as principal investigator on NIH-funded mentored (K-level) and/or independent (R-level) grants or comparable peer-reviewed funding from other organizations. Strong record of scholarly productivity, including first-authored publications in peer-reviewed journals and evidence of emerging regional or national recognition in the candidate’s field of expertise. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring, and participation in institutional activities. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, oral, and written communication skills. Professional, proactive, collaborative, conscientious, and results-oriented approach to work, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and exercise sound judgment. Ability to think strategically and conceptually, innovate effectively, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and navigate complex situations with professionalism and flexibility. Highly motivated, intellectually curious, and adaptable to evolving research priorities and organizational needs.
