Patriot Broadband is seeking an experienced Fiber Splicer to join our growing outside plant construction team. Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience performing high-volume fiber splicing in an outside plant construction environment. This is not an entry-level fiber technician position. Candidates should be experienced with production splicing, testing, troubleshooting, closures, splice documentation, and working independently to meet project production and quality requirements throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states. For this outside plant role, a qualified Fiber Splicer will be able to demonstrate proficiency in fusion splicing, 144, 288 and ribbon and have experience operating a fiber splicing bucket truck/ van or pulling a trailer, climbing ladders and poles, and has worked with underground fiber cabling also. This position is project based and will require travel to the job sites, which may include overnights throughout Pennsylvania and other northeast and mid-Atlantic states, currently including Maryland and Vermont.
This position works closely with construction crews, project managers, and network operations personnel to ensure high-quality fiber installations and reliable network performance. Work may include assignments on state-funded broadband projects.
An ideal Fiber Splicer candidate will be able to occasionally report to the York PA headquarters. The desired candidate will have a strong understanding of operations in the broadband industry and will use effective and professional communication techniques to foster a positive team culture. As an autonomous representative of the company, the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve will also play an important role in the candidate's performance, strength and success within this role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform fusion splicing of single-mode and ribbon fiber optic cables.
- Perform loose tube, 144 and 288 count.
- Install, terminate, and test fiber optic cables in aerial, underground, and buried environments.
- Conduct OTDR, power meter, and loss testing to verify network integrity.
- Read and interpret fiber design prints, splice diagrams, and construction drawings.
- Prepare and maintain accurate splice records and as-built documentation.
- Troubleshoot fiber network issues and perform restoration activities during outages.
- Maintain splice trailers, equipment, tools, and testing devices.
- Coordinate with construction crews, drill operators, and project management staff.
- Follow company safety procedures and OSHA regulations.
- Place both aerial and underground splice closures along with a variety of other closures common to the splicing and termination of fiber optic cables
- Understand and adhere to customer and company timelines
- Team player that coordinates and communicates activities with other employees, departments, and management
- Will travel on a regular and daily basis to meet customer and business needs
Requirements:
- Education Level: High School/GED
- Experience: min 3+ years of relevant job experience as a fiber optic technician with advanced knowledge of fusion splicing equipment and fiber testing tools. 5+ years preferred.
- Ability to read fiber network maps and construction drawings.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain a DOT medical card
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical construction-related activities.
- Ability to travel as required.
- Must have the ability to work safely, strictly following safety guidelines working in the vicinity of power, working aloft, and working in confined spaces
- Adequate visual acuity and color perception to accurately perform splicing and other job duties
- Fiber Optic Technician (FOT) or equivalent certification, preferred.
- OSHA 10 Construction certification, beneficial not required.
- Experience with broadband, FTTH, middle-mile, or utility fiber networks, preferred.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment for this position may be moderate to loud. All work is outdoors so employees in this position are regularly exposed to outside weather conditions which can include but is not limited to extreme heat and cold temperatures; inclement weather such as rain, snow, sleet, and dust as well as adverse driving conditions including wet roads, icy roads, and fog. Often work will be performed near busy highways and streets.

Employees assigned to public works projects may be compensated in accordance with applicable Davis-Bacon Act and/or Pennsylvania Prevailing Wage requirements. Compensation may vary based on project assignment, classification, and applicable wage determinations.
