Education Required – Master’s degree from a school of nurse anesthesia accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). Work Experience Required – None. Certifications License as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice. Certification through the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification from the American Heart Association. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process. Ability to work a flexible work schedule (e.g., 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability). Job Duties Documents patient procedures and incidents. Assesses patient before, during, and after administering anesthesia. Ensures patient safety and administers anesthesia following accepted practice techniques. Acts as a liaison to surgeons, anesthesiologists, co‑workers, patients, and families. Participates in department quality assurance initiatives and activities of professional development. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style. Performs other related duties as required. Physical and Environmental Demands Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The job may be rated Light Work when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree, or when it requires pushing or pulling of arm or leg controls, and/or when it requires a production rate pace involving constant pushing and pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue. The incumbent works in a patient care area and may be exposed to hazardous medications or hazardous waste. Occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases may be present.
