Job Summary The overall purpose of the Certified Medication Aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to patients/residents. The individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. They also perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and well‑being of patients and residents. Qualifications State certification as a Nursing Assistant mandatory. State approved medication administration certification (where required). Ability to read, write, and speak the English language. Responsibilities Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy. Demonstrates knowledge of the "five rights" of medication administration. May take and record vital signs of patients/residents as assigned or as required by certain medications. Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately. Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse or the appropriate shift supervisor. Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy. Documents reasons for and responses to PRN medications in a timely manner. May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge) nurse per facility policy. Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy. Attends facility education in‑services. May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift. May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse on the shift. Ensures that medication rooms, medication carts, and medication refrigerators are kept clean and well organized. Ensures that any expired medications are removed for destruction per facility policy and procedures. Attends Quality Assurance meetings per request. Can function as a Team Leader/Role Model. Has reviewed Cantex Continuing Care Networks Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention and knows the employee's responsibility to enforce it.
