Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 27 weeks Shift: Day/Night rotation Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year in an acute hospital setting License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification Must-Have: - One year of acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. The ED RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN evidences skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate to manage both life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage, identifying the initial management of patients of all age groups and assigning priority of care in accordance with Triage Standards. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical need, detecting and documenting any major deviations from norms within acceptable time frames. He/She correctly identifies the necessary steps and interventions required. The ED RN uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. He/She identifies contributing factors, health history, and activities preceding the emergent health event. The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual, including family dynamics, and documents any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. He/She reassesses the patient to identify responses to treatment or changes in condition and responds appropriately. The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. The ED RN makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. He/She teaches the patient what is needed to continue care/healing at home. The ED RN assesses patient/family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding. He/She asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to the patient and family. He/She acknowledges that the patient and family are the central focus of all care and services. The ED RN embraces the importance of creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. He/She keeps patients and significant others informed of the process of care and anticipates patient/family needs. The ED RN maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout their visit. He/She updates patient communication boards throughout the patient's stay.
