Working Hours and Location The department is located in the Lemon Creek area. Patrol officers work 12‑hour shifts and rotate between day and night on a quarterly schedule. Officers may laterally transfer to specialty units such as Criminal Investigations, Drug Unit, School Resource, Airport, Downtown, SWAT, EOD, Crisis Negotiation, and others. Typical Responsibilities Conduct patrols on foot, bicycle, or in a police car to observe activities on city streets and public areas; use discretion when taking enforcement actions. Operate police vehicles; investigate accidents, enforce laws, issue citations, and enforce compliance with federal, state, and local laws. Take charge of situations requiring law‑enforcement involvement such as car accidents, emergencies, and public disturbances. Provide first aid, direct traffic, and request emergency assistance. Perform on‑site personal interviews and record facts. Respond to calls for service, investigate civil and criminal complaints, and determine if police action is required. Question witnesses, collect and preserve evidence, prepare criminal and civil complaints, serve process papers and citations. Refer victims to appropriate agencies, such as Family and Youth Services or domestic violence programs. Use specialized police equipment including cameras, radar, blood‑alcohol testing instruments, radios, and less‑lethal/deadly weapons. Apprehend, pursue, restrain, and detain suspects and violators. Make arrests and transport prisoners. Testify in civil and criminal court cases. Prepare reports on investigations, activities, and dangerous conditions. Assist other law‑enforcement agencies. Complete special duty assignments such as public speaking, search and rescue operations, public education, and special training sessions. Perform community‑relations, investigation unit, or metro unit assignments. Perform additional related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Education : High school graduation or GED. Other Requirements : Citizen of the United States or U.S. National. At least 21 years of age at time of appointment. Valid Alaska Driver’s License by date of appointment and for ongoing employment. Additional Qualifications for Lateral Officers : Prior service in a law‑enforcement agency in the State of Alaska with at least one year of uniform patrol duty as a commissioned officer (DPS Academy Certified) and completion of a state, federal, or local regulated academy. For service outside Alaska: one year of uniform patrol duty in a city of at least 5,000 population or a metropolitan area of at least 25,000 population, plus completion of a certified academy. Current or former officers must be in “Good Standing.” Extra Experience Points : 0 points for 1–2 years of experience. 5 points for 3 or more years of experience. 10 points for 3+ years with an Alaska Police Standards Council Police Officer Certificate.
