Maintenance Worker III
The Public Services Department of the City of Norwalk is seeking a Maintenance Worker III for the Facilities Division. The Maintenance Worker III will be responsible for undertaking a range of semi-skilled tasks related to the upkeep, construction, or repair of City facilities and buildings. This may include maintaining parks, recreation buildings, open spaces, or working on the construction, maintenance, repair, and servicing of City streets, sewers, and storm facilities. The Maintenance Worker III will also be required to take on any related work or special assignments as needed.
Essential Duties
Depending on assignment, essential duties include but are not limited to, the following:
- PARKS: Maintains park, open space areas, athletic fields and ball courts; drags ball fields; lays out and/or lines fields for games; sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs; changes light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; sweep floors; picks up litter from premises; collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds, lines cans with liners; cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies; cleans spills; cleans drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, etc.; dusts furniture, washes windows, walls, metal and woodwork; cleans rain gutters; sweeps roofs; assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs and City events; maintains pool facilities, including cleaning, using chemicals to treat water, and makes adjustments and repairs to pool and auxiliary equipment; edges, and weeds lawns, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; plants, prunes, or trims hedges, trees, flowers, and shrubs; cleans walks, parking areas, and other areas of leaves and other debris; operates stump grinder, chipper, blowers, sweepers, edgers, hedge trimmers, clippers, sprayers, and other equipment or vehicles; sprays pesticides at parks and City grounds; makes minor repairs such as sharpening blades; performs routine maintenance and equipment safety inspection; orders janitorial supplies; keeps records of work completed; assists in the training of lower level employees or community service workers; interacts with the public; maintain and enforce park rules.
- FACILITIES: Installs, repairs and maintains electrical wiring and equipment; repairs motors and appliances; installs and repairs electrical wiring and lighting circuits in connection with the repair or alteration of buildings and facilities; Replaces ballasts, fluorescent tubes, and bulbs; performs plumbing to replace broken pipes; cleans plugged drains; diagnose, repairs and maintains valves, fittings, and other plumbing fixtures; builds cabinets and shelves; constructs or repairs walls, platforms and ramps; hangs doors; finishes wood and repairs a variety of wooden objects; performs graffiti removal by sandblasting, painting, and resin coating walls and buildings; prepares surfaces for painting; applies paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, or other protective finishes to various surfaces; provides custodial services for facilities, cleans floors, restrooms, and removes trash; sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, polishes, and waxes floors; cleans rugs and carpets; dusts, polishes, and waxes furniture and woodwork; cleans and stocks restrooms; empties and cleans waste receptacles and ashtrays; washes walls, windows, mirrors, and blinds; replaces and/or cleans windows; secures buildings, locks and unlocks rooms; moves furniture or other heavy objects for set up of City functions; maintains records of supplies, materials, equipment, and time spent on repairs; purchases materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete a maintenance or repair task.
- STREETS: Sets, forms, pours, and finishes concrete to repair curbs, gutters, driveways, and sidewalks; performs street repairs and patching; lays asphalt; clears roadside and other City properties by cutting brush, raking and hoeing; sprays weeds; answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removes fallen trees and limbs; performs emergency patching of streets; performs pest and roach control in sewers; operates pickup and dump trucks, tractors, and other maintenance equipment; performs routine maintenance on equipment; maintains City bus stop locations including trash receptacles and benches; keeps records of work completed, materials needed and utilized, and time spent on jobs; purchases materials, equipment and supplies necessary to complete jobs.
- TREES/GREENSCAPE: Repairs, installs, and maintains irrigation systems including timers, clocks, backflow devices, piping and sprinkler heads; plants trees; stakes and restakes trees; maintains landscaped areas; operates power and heavy equipment related to median projects; interacts with the public and county groups regarding City-wide landscape refurbishment programs; meets with residents and businesses regarding tree maintenance and planting; keeps records of work completed, materials needed and utilized, and time spent on jobs; purchases materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete jobs; assists in the training of lower-level employees or community service workers; participates in the control of traffic and may set out cones, signs and barricades for safety purposes.
- TRAFFIC: Repairs and replaces traffic signs; conducts traffic striping and legend painting; installs removes and repairs guard rails and barricades; participates in the control of traffic; directs traffic and may set out cones, signs, or barricades; may act as road flagman; meets with residents and businesses regarding sewer complaints; works with street sweeping contractors regarding signage and general street cleaning operations; maintains records and inventories of supplies, materials, equipment and time spent on traffic operations; purchases materials, equipment, and supplies necessary to complete jobs; responds to traffic work orders from Traffic Engineer.
Qualification Guidelines
KNOWLEDGE: PARKS - Knowledge of: equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; first aid and applicable safety precautions. FACILITIES - Knowledge of: The materials, tools, and methods used in general building repair and maintenance; mechanical and electrical components and sequences; special paints; plumbing and electrical specialties. STREETS - Knowledge of: common tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance work; basic safety precautions and procedures. TREES/GREENSCAPE - Knowledge of: equipment, materials and methods used in tree trimming and landscape irrigations maintenance; basic safety practices and procedures. TRAFFIC - Knowledge of: equipment, materials and methods used for traffic maintenance and signage repair; basic safety practices and procedures.
ABILITIES: PARKS - Ability to: operate required tools and equipment; exercise independent judgment and initiative in daily work activities; direct and instruct others in proper work methods; work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; communicate orally and in writing; use equipment and tools properly and safely; understand, follow, and transmit and oral instructions; provide lead direction; work independently; establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public. FACILITIES - Ability to: safely use of hand and/or power tools; perform carpentry, routine plumbing, electrical, painting, and mechanical repair work; work safety; understand and follow oral and written directions; provide lead direction; work independently; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. STREETS - Ability to: perform strenuous tasks, often for extended periods and/or adverse climatic conditions; perform asphalt repair and concrete removal; provide lead direction; work independently; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work safely and efficiently; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. TREES/GREENSCAPE - Ability to: perform strenuous tasks for extended periods of time while elevated and in high traffic volume conditions; safely use hand and power equipment; exercise independent judgment and initiative in daily work; provide lead direction and instruction in proper work methods; establish and maintain effective working relationships. TRAFFIC - Ability to: safely use hand and power equipment while working in high traffic volume conditions; keep accurate records of sign installations; exercise independent judgment and initiative in daily work; provide lead direction and instruction in proper work methods; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include: Graduation from high school or equivalent, and a total of four years experience including at least one year of experience in three of the following five areas: parks, facilities, trees/greenscape, traffic, and streets.
