Description:
The Operating Room Assistant is responsible for assisting the nursing staff in receiving, caring for, and transporting patients to and from the perioperative region.
Other duties include cleaning and maintaining patient care equipment and providing supplies and equipment as needed.
The role involves actively participating in quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance activities.
Attending and participating in equipment and supply in-services, evaluations, and staff meetings is essential.
Completing all designated assignments accurately and efficiently is required.
Contributing positively to the unit and department is important.
Disposing of trash and linen per hospital protocol is necessary.
Identifying and sharing recommendations for containing costs in the assigned area is encouraged.
Maintaining effective working relationships with staff, managers, physicians, patients, and their families is expected.
The assistant may perform patient care functions per hospital policies and procedures, including shave preps, non-invasive monitoring, specimen collection, ambulating, and repositioning patients.
The role includes receiving instruments and equipment from assigned operating rooms, removing items flagged as broken by nursing staff, and cleaning rooms and equipment following protocol.
Participating in monitoring and documenting quality improvement issues is required.
The assistant may participate in unit, department, or hospital committees as requested.
Performing housekeeping and stocking duties is essential to maintain a clean, safe work environment.
Practicing aseptic techniques as per established standards of care and infection control policies is necessary.
Prioritizing work using available resources is required.
The assistant will proactively use problem-solving processes to identify, prevent, or resolve inter-departmental issues.
Timely response to, documentation of, and distribution of items as requested is required.
The role involves self-assessment of skill level and seeking resources to learn new skills, equipment, or procedures to stay current.
Supporting administrative decisions and ensuring compliance with all departmental, institutional, and regulatory policies and procedures is essential.
Transporting and receiving patients, equipment, supplies, blood products, and specimens within the region and facility as per policies and procedures is required.
The assistant will work with clinical educators to orient new staff members and cross-train in select functions as needed.
