Class A CDL Line Haul Mileage Driver

Job Summary Line Haul Drivers operate various tractor‑trailer combinations over long distances between customer service centers and customer facilities or work sites outside of the service center’s geographic area. They sort, handle, load, and/or unload freight at company and customer locations. Primary Responsibilities Operate vehicle safely within DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, maintenance, and hazardous material transportation. Meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and satisfactorily pass drug and alcohol tests. Perform pre‑trip inspections of vehicles before beginning a trip. Ensure that products loaded onto the trailer are stable and will not shift during transit and delivery. Adjust load securement and load distribution on the truck as needed. Operate tablets/phones to record delivery information and begin navigation. Unsecure freight for delivery and unload freight at drop‑off locations with a hand truck. Be available for around‑the‑clock shifts to accommodate freight movements and may be away from home for extended periods of time. Perform additional duties as assigned by management. Qualifications Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Must have at least 12 months of tractor‑trailer driving experience or be a graduate of a state‑certified and licensed truck driving school. Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements. Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, and maintenance. Must possess a working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems. Must be able to properly operate a handheld mini‑computer when required. Must be able to read maps, road signs, maintain logs, and perform simple mathematical calculations. Must have the ability to shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals. Must be available for around‑the‑clock trips and may be away from home for extended periods of time. Must meet or exceed medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation and pass drug and alcohol tests if applicable. Must satisfactorily pass Old Dominion orientation/training program instructions by an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer. Physical Demands (Sitting) Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for up to 11 hours.

  • Standing/Walking) Must be able to stand and walk on various surfaces, including concrete, pavement, wood, metal, slippery, and wet surfaces.
  • Bending/Stooping/Kneeling) Must perform occasional squatting and crouching to handle, position, and secure freight, and conduct pre‑trip inspections.
  • Climbing) Must be able to enter and exit the cab 8 to 10 times a day; the cab floor is 36‑66 inches above ground level.
  • Moving Materials) Must be able to push freight weighing up to 500 pounds on a dolly or cart, pull freight weighing up to 500 pounds, and carry items weighing 1–100 pounds, distances up to 100 feet.
  • Reaching) Must reach for freight at waist level, above shoulder height, and below waist level as needed.
Must install and remove tire chains, operate pallet jacks or hand trucks, use shrink wrap, and operate cockpit controls. Must use cognitive skills for attention to surroundings, reading manifests, and performing safety checks. Work Environment Work may involve loading and unloading with others, operating in an enclosed vehicle, exposure to all weather conditions, varying noise levels, and changing lighting conditions. The job may include dealing with customers, reading signage, and operating within varying traffic environments.
