Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description
The phlebotomist plays a key role in safely collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting a smooth and efficient workflow in a busy clinical practice. This role involves performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training as needed, and recommending improvements to workflow to ensure high-quality patient care and accurate laboratory results.
Responsibilities
This position is based in a busy family practice office that serves a wide range of patient populations. The environment is very fast paced, with approximately 25-35 patients seen per day, primarily in the morning. While the practice is family-focused, children are rarely drawn. Standard hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with work every other Saturday. The role involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, consistent use of phlebotomy and specimen processing equipment such as needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges, and adherence to established safety and infection control procedures. Professional clinical attire is expected, suitable for a medical office and direct patient care.

The phlebotomist plays a key role in safely collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting a smooth and efficient workflow in a busy clinical practice. This role involves performing blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training as needed, and recommending improvements to workflow to ensure high-quality patient care and accurate laboratory results.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and care.
- Clearly and courteously explain the blood draw and specimen collection process to patients, including procedures for urine and fecal samples when required.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and laboratory protocols.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and tracking of all samples.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Package specimens appropriately for transport, following all safety and handling guidelines.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure all documentation is complete and correct.
- Fully understand and follow physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling.
- Provide professional, empathetic customer service to patients from diverse age groups, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
- Assist with troubleshooting routine specimen collection or processing issues and contribute suggestions for improving workflow efficiency.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures when requested.
- Proven ability to perform blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to established procedures.
- Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders or computer labels.
- Ability to accurately update patient information and record maintenance data in relevant systems.
- Knowledge of proper decontamination procedures and safe handling of biological specimens.
- Effective customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients.
- Comfort working with various patient populations, including pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of phlebotomy or related clinical experience.
- Experience in a fast-paced outpatient or family practice setting.
- Familiarity with specimen processing workflows and laboratory requisition systems.
- Ability to handle a high volume of patients while maintaining accuracy and a calm, professional demeanor.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and specimens at once.
- Commitment to following clinical and laboratory protocols and maintaining patient confidentiality.
