Overview VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System is offering a funded audiology externship for the 2027-2028 academic year. The externship is a 12‑month, full‑time (2080 hours) commitment with an anticipated start date in May or June 2027. The program will be based in Rochester with rotations at Bath VA Medical Center and Canandaigua VA Medical Center. Clinical Experiences The extern will participate in the following clinical experiences: Hearing evaluations Hearing aid fittings, adjustments, and repairs Vestibular evaluations (VNGs and posturography) Cochlear implant evaluations, activations, and mapping Osseointegrated device evaluations and fittings Progressive tinnitus management program Electrophysiological evaluations TeleAudiology Inpatient/CLC services Pre‑Internship Requirements Externs are expected to have mastered the following skills before beginning the externship: Basic audiometry skills Masking techniques Basic hearing aid knowledge Skills to be Learned During the Externship Auditory evaluations Tympanometry Acoustic reflexes Hearing aid dispensing and fitting Progressive tinnitus management Cochlear implant troubleshooting and rehabilitation Vestibular evaluations Clinical Opportunities Externs will gain experience in the following areas, with varying frequency: Adult hearing evaluations – everyday Tympanometry – everyday Acoustic reflexes – everyday Hearing aid dispensing – everyday Hearing aid selection and fitting – everyday Vestibular assessments – regular Vestibular rehabilitation – rarely Hearing screens – rarely Evoked potential assessments – rarely Otoacoustic emissions – rarely Industrial/hearing conservation – rarely Auditory processing evaluations – never Pediatric evaluations (infant/toddler, school‑age) – never Intra‑operative monitoring – never Cerumen management – everyday Cochlear implant evaluations – regular Cochlear implant rehabilitation – regular Tinnitus assessments – regular Tinnitus rehabilitation – regular Audiologic rehabilitation (group or individualized) – rarely Benefits and Working Conditions The externship provides a stipend and benefits. Vacation is 4 hours biweekly. The extern will work 40 hours per week and may travel to Bath and Canandaigua VAs (≈27 miles from Rochester for Canandaigua and ≈71 miles for Bath). Travel costs for interview are not reimbursed.
