Our organization is in search of a distinguished and forward-thinking physician leader to take on the role of Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. This remarkable position provides the chance to guide a prestigious academic department within our health system, which stands as the sole academic health sciences center and Level I trauma facility in northeastern New York.

In the capacity of Chair, the ideal candidate will deliver strategic direction across the department's clinical, educational, research, and administrative functions, while promoting innovative patient care, faculty growth, and academic distinction. The Chair will collaborate closely with both health system and college leadership to enhance specialty services throughout the region and further develop one of the leading otolaryngology programs in the area.

About the Department

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery comprises 14 board-certified surgeons, supported by a strong team of Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Audiologists, and Speech-Language Pathologists. This department offers comprehensive medical and surgical care for both pediatric and adult patients. As part of our health system, it functions as a regional tertiary referral center, providing advanced diagnosis and treatment for conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck. Our facility is the exclusive provider of tertiary and quaternary subspecialty care for nearly 3 million individuals across 25 counties in northeastern New York and western New England.

The department features generalist otolaryngology faculty alongside fellowship-trained specialists in a wide array of subspecialties, including:

  • Head & Neck Surgical Oncology

  • Microvascular Reconstruction

  • Otology and Neurotology, featuring a Cochlear Implant Program

  • Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery

  • Laryngology and Voice Disorders

  • Pediatric Otolaryngology

  • Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

  • Sleep Surgery

  • Audiology and Hearing Services

The department is dedicated to delivering multidisciplinary care through close collaboration with oncology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, pulmonology, allergy, pediatrics, speech-language pathology, audiology, and other specialties within our health system.

Established as an academic Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2021, our program is committed to resident education, medical student instruction, clinical research, and innovation.

Position Overview & Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Formulate and implement a comprehensive strategic vision that aligns with the missions of our organization to enhance patient care, education, research, and regional program expansion.

  • Clinical Leadership: Actively participate in the clinical mission and oversee all clinical operations within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, ensuring high-quality care, patient safety, operational efficiency, and access to specialty services across the health system.

  • Academic Leadership: Promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate medical education, faculty development, and continuing medical education while supporting the department's ACGME-accredited residency program.

  • Faculty Recruitment and Development: Attract, mentor, and retain exceptional faculty while fostering career growth, academic advancement, leadership opportunities, and professional satisfaction. Enhance current resources and successes by further developing faculty expertise in both generalist and subspecialty care.

  • Research Development: Broaden the department's research initiatives by encouraging clinical, translational, and collaborative research efforts while supporting scholarly activities and external funding opportunities.

  • Program Development: Identify opportunities to expand subspecialty programs, multidisciplinary collaborations, outreach services, and regional referral networks to address the evolving needs of the communities served.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships with departments across our organization to enhance comprehensive patient care, education, and research. Collaborate with our Vice President of Strategic Marketing to strategize on how our department can effectively engage with the regional market of otolaryngologists.

  • Learning and Working Environment: Cultivate a culture that promotes a healthy learning and working atmosphere for faculty, trainees, and staff, while ensuring equitable access to care.

  • Operational Oversight: Provide administrative and financial leadership for the department, including budgeting, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, physician recruitment, and resource allocation.

  • Philanthropy: Collaborate with the foundation to foster philanthropic support for research, educational initiatives, faculty development and recruitment, and programmatic growth.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with board certification in Otolaryngology

  • Eligibility for medical licensure in New York State

  • Academic rank of Professor or Associate Professor with relevant leadership experience

  • Demonstrated leadership within an academic medical center or integrated health system

  • Proven track record of excellence in clinical care, education, research, faculty development, and administrative leadership

  • Experience in strategic planning, financial management, quality improvement, and healthcare operations

  • Commitment to fostering collaborative teams and an inclusive academic environment

Compensation and Professional Development

  • Salary range of $560,000-$840,000 based on subspecialty, academic rank, and experience
