Design Engineer - Protection and Controls (Topeka, KS - Onsite) Immediate opening for a design engineer focused on protection and control systems within electric substations, transmission lines, and generation equipment. Responsibilities Perform engineering design related to the company’s electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment control and fault protection systems. Work closely with System Protection Engineers to develop P&C designs for assigned project work and become familiar with engineering documents and drawings. Specify substation equipment using ratings (e.g., bus, ground mat, conduit, switches, power circuit breakers, transformers, relay panels, instrumentation, capacitor banks, reactor banks) to ensure reliability and safety. Design protective relay systems, metering, and SCADA by referencing standards, past projects, new research, regulations, and system requirements. Gather and analyze system ratings (voltage, power ratings, ampacity, system impedance, CT ratios, relay settings) and provide data to reporting agencies (SPP, NERC, FERC) to meet new system requirements. Produce detailed system protection and control project scopes and cost estimates to support multi-year projects and budget planning. Support operations and construction personnel with troubleshooting, failure analysis, mis-operations, testing assistance, commissioning assistance, and other technical duties. Prepare and study technical drawings and specifications of electrical systems and equipment to ensure installation and operations conform to requirements. Direct designers and technicians by reviewing work and monitoring progress to ensure compliance with safety and regulations. Handle multiple priorities and operate efficiently in high-stress environments. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited program. Preferred experience with electric substation, generation, and transmission line equipment control and fault protection systems. Knowledge of basic engineering principles and advanced mathematics. Understanding of schematic, wiring, and logic diagrams. Ability to learn major systems in a timely fashion; knowledge of Generation, Transmission, and Distribution system relays and associated protection schemes. Capability to develop elementary drawings, relay logic, and settings for system protection designs. Dependable, self-motivated, detail-oriented with excellent organizational and proofreading skills. Effective communication and collaboration with other company personnel. Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases preferred. #J-18808-Ljbffr
