Job Description

Job Description

Job Title: Electronics Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on performing inspections, testing, and basic maintenance of building fire alarm and life safety systems in commercial environments. The electronics technician supports the company’s mission by ensuring systems operate safely and reliably, accurately documenting all work performed, and collaborating closely with experienced technicians and customers. The position requires strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small field crew.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fire protection inspections and preventative maintenance services on building fire alarm and life safety systems in commercial facilities.
  • Test fire alarm devices and related low-voltage components, record test results accurately, and generate clear, complete reports.
  • Assist tenured technicians with basic maintenance and repairs of fire alarm, low-voltage, and security systems, following established procedures and safety standards.
  • Use hand tools and low-voltage installation techniques to support installation, structured cabling, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Maintain professional, timely communication with the inspection team, field crew members, and customers to coordinate work and provide status updates.
  • Effectively utilize technical resources, information, and materials to ensure efficient execution of assigned tasks and projects.
  • Monitor the progress and completion of assigned tasks, follow up on outstanding items, and ensure work meets quality and compliance requirements.
  • Implement available tools and internal systems to accurately document updates or changes made to customer projects and equipment.
  • Complete and submit all required task-related, activity, productivity, and documentation reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain high attention to detail when entering notes and information into internal systems to ensure accurate records and traceability.
  • Work both as a lead support and as a helper within a small team of 2–4 technicians, adapting to different roles depending on project needs.
  • Coordinate with a supervisor to pursue NICET I Fire Alarm certification after one year of employment and successfully complete the certification during the second year.
  • Adhere to company values and standards of conduct while interacting with customers, colleagues, and partners.
  • Plan, organize, and control daily work activities to meet project deadlines and customer expectations.
  • Effectively handle multiple tasks and occasional stressful situations while maintaining a professional and safety-focused approach.

Essential Skills

  • Two-year degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in electronics or telecommunications, or NICET I Fire Alarm certification.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience or aptitude working with electronics, low-voltage systems, or telecommunications equipment.
  • Demonstrated customer interface skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients and team members.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, controlling, and implementing goals and objectives for assigned work.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that build trust and respect with coworkers and support effective problem solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and handle stressful situations while maintaining accuracy and composure.
  • Proficiency with office technology, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
  • High attention to detail, especially when making notes and documenting work in internal systems.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in the field.
  • Capability to stand, walk, climb, sit, and use hands and fingers for extended periods while performing technical work.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 40 pounds and perform reaching, grasping, and carrying tasks as part of daily duties.
  • Adequate close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment to perform detailed technical work safely.
  • Above-average intellectual ability and sound judgment to support troubleshooting and problem-solving activities in the field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with fire alarm systems, low-voltage installation, or structured cabling in commercial environments.
  • Hands-on experience using hand tools for electronics, construction, or low-voltage installation work.
  • Familiarity with installation and troubleshooting of fire alarm, security, and related low-voltage systems.
  • Exposure to construction environments, particularly new commercial construction projects.
  • Comfort working in a small team environment, often alongside a lead technician and other helpers.
  • Interest in pursuing and maintaining industry certifications such as NICET I Fire Alarm.
  • Ability to align with and support the company’s core values and culture.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel within the broader regional territory when needed, typically within approximately 30 miles and occasionally toward nearby metropolitan areas.

Why Work Here?

Employees join a close-knit, family-oriented team where collaboration, trust, and long-term relationships are highly valued. The organization invests in career growth, with a strong track record of promoting from within—many engineers have advanced from field roles into more positions. Team members benefit from working with tenured installation crews who share knowledge and support professional development, while gaining experience across diverse commercial sectors such as corporate facilities, education, healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation. The environment emphasizes stability, repeat business, and continuous learning, offering a solid foundation for building a long-term career in fire alarm and life safety systems.

Work Environment

The role is based in commercial industry settings, with a strong focus on new construction projects and recurring work at existing customer sites. Typical facilities include corporate buildings, educational institutions, municipal facilities, healthcare environments, places of worship, manufacturing plants, and transportation-related sites. Work is primarily performed as part of a small crew of 2–4 people, often consisting of a lead technician and helpers. The standard schedule is approximately 40 hours per week, generally following a consistent workweek, with the possibility of additional hours as project needs arise. Most assignments are within the local territory, with occasional travel within a broader regional area, typically within about 30 miles and sometimes extending toward nearby cities. The environment is often controlled and orderly, but at times it can be hot, dirty, noisy, or confined, requiring comfort with physically demanding and varied site conditions. Work involves the use of hand tools, low-voltage equipment, and office technology to document and manage projects, and may require adherence to site-specific safety and attire requirements appropriate for construction and industrial locations.
