Ultrasound Technologist- Per Diem

Major Responsibilities Determine appropriate image scan technique and position for patient using immobilization and support devices. Position patient, adjust equipment, and secure immobilization devices to tactfully perform procedures. Determine appropriate image technique based on anatomy and patient’s condition to obtain quality films for radiologists. Secure history from patient regarding reason for the prescribed test and record it on the appropriate form for review. Operate advanced and sophisticated ultrasound equipment. Assist radiologists with ultrasound procedures, including advanced specialty procedures such as liver and breast imaging. Adhere to accepted safety standards and practices to ensure patient safety and quality patient care. Maintain compliance with safety standards to protect patients and staff at all times. Maintain supplies and cleanliness for the assigned room on a daily basis. Assure accuracy of the exam performed and requisition. Perform clerical duties such as maintaining adequate patient records, answering phones, scheduling examinations, and giving instructions to patients in preparation for examination. Operate ultrasound equipment safely as required. Coordinate quality control areas, including checking ultrasound films to ensure optimal quality and disseminating exams to the ultrasound technologist. Label ultrasound films according to department quality assurance standards and criteria. Prepare sedation/needles as necessary following prescribed procedures. Coordinate the flow of patients into and out of the department in accordance with established departmental procedures. Transport patients into and out of the department as necessary. Check film quality to assure optimal quality is attained and correct film labeling is provided. Perform quality control activities, respond to inquiries, coordinate patient flow, and communicate with staff radiologists and other hospital personnel to ensure exams are completed in a timely fashion. Prepare the ultrasound suite for procedures, maintain equipment, and supplies as required. Monitor inventory of supplies and linen to ensure an adequate level is available for overall departmental usage. Provide instruction and orientation to students, technologists, and new technologists for assessment of their performance reviews. Provide direction and instruction to ultrasound technologists in need of assistance with specific procedures. Provision of inservices to the technical staff to maintain technical competence and share new information acquired through formal inservices or seminars. Participate in problem‑solving issues addressing patients, department operations, quality assurance procedures, interdepartmental relationships, and employee morale. Maintain positive guest relations and telephone etiquette following prescribed departmental policies and procedures. Maintain current CPR and RDMS certifications. Assume a leadership role in the absence of the senior technician to ensure continuity of department policies and procedures. Education and Experience Graduate from an accredited AMA School of Sonography. Preferred: 1 year experience as a sonographer. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of HIS and basic knowledge of RIS systems. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to interact with customers from all levels. Certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). CPR certification. Must achieve ARDMS certification within one year of hire. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Make independent professional decisions pertaining to high‑quality patient care. High degree of technical skills and ability to function with minimal assistance. Conscientious practice of high‑quality patient care. Ability to lift and/or move patients; heavy lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally and 10–20 pounds constantly. Work in a fast‑paced environment with established time constraints. May be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases. Work rotating shifts any day of the week. Deal with extremely ill patients. Recognize needs and behaviors of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and older adult age groups and adapt communication accordingly. When required, lift patients up to 35 pounds without assistance; use patient‑handling equipment as needed. This position can recognize needs and behaviors of the following age groups: pediatric (newborn, toddler, school‑age), adolescent, adult, older adult. Evidence of this can be shown by recognizing levels of development and modifying approach and exhibiting communication skills necessary to interpret age‑specific responses.
