Senior Paralegal

This is in addition to standard leave accrual for employees. Why does the job exist? The Senior Paralegal serves a critical role to assist attorneys and support staff with core legal functions, management of high‑level projects, and advanced review, redaction, and processing of records for Inspection of Public Records (IPRA) requests submitted to the NMDOJ. The Senior Paralegal for IPRA is vitally important to manage the volume of incoming records requests and any existing backlog. How does it get done? Oversee incoming records requests and assist with the management of deadlines as set by the Inspection of Public Records Act, NMSA 1978, Section 14‑2‑1, et. seq. Search for and analyze records responsive to incoming records requests in consultation with IPRA attorneys and other NMDOJ staff Carefully review and redact records for personal identifying information and confidential or sensitive data Maintain physical and electronic records, correspond with requesters and other state agencies, and provide general support to the IPRA attorneys Who are the customers? This position will primarily support NMDOJ attorneys. Ideal Candidate Prior work in records management and legal support that includes working closely with attorneys Familiarity with state and federal public records rules and deadlines Excellent written and verbal communication skills, proficiency with current and new technologies, and ability to work independently in busy environments. Corresponding with constituents, government officials, and the public at large Superior attention to detail Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies and two (2) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment as some statewide travel may be required. Employment is subject to criminal background check and is conditional pending results of criminal background check. Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony offense by a court of this state, any other state or the United States. Working Conditions Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, lifting and reaching may be required.
