Radiation Safety Technician

Position Description Summary APT Research is hiring a Radiation Safety Technician in Huntsville, AL to provide technical support in radiation safety, systems safety, and occupational health hazard analysis related to Department of Defense (DoD) commodities, including aircraft and missile systems/components. This position supports radiation safety operations through the review of technical data, site surveys, inspections, and regulatory compliance activities associated with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) site license management. The selected candidate will assist in ensuring the safe transport, handling, storage, maintenance, and overhaul of radiation‑producing or radiologically controlled components at military depot and maintenance facilities. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on knowledge of radiation safety principles, hazard analysis, compliance inspections, and human‑factor considerations as they apply to military or industrial systems. Responsibilities Provide technical support in radiation safety and safety/health hazard analysis for DoD aircraft and missile systems, components, and related commodities. Assist in the review and evaluation of test data, technical reports, and engineering documentation related to radiation safety and systems safety. Support NRC site license management activities to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for the transport, handling, storage, and maintenance of radiological components. Conduct or support radiological site surveys, inspections, and assessments at depot, overhaul, maintenance, and operational sites. Evaluate work environments, procedures, and maintenance practices for compliance with applicable radiation protection, occupational safety, and health standards. Assist in identifying and analyzing radiation‑related hazards and recommending mitigation or corrective actions. Provide technical input regarding human‑factor engineering associated with radiation exposure, radiation safety procedures, and personnel interaction with aircraft and missile systems/components. Support investigations, documentation, and follow‑up actions related to radiation safety findings, incidents, or compliance concerns. Coordinate with safety personnel, engineers, program offices, maintenance personnel, and regulatory stakeholders to support safe mission operations. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to surveys, inspections, compliance reviews, and radiation safety program activities. Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of radiation safety procedures, training materials, and compliance processes. Required Experience/Education Bachelors Degree in physical science, engineering, or biological science Associates degree/technical diploma combined with specialized, long‑term experience of at least 10 years related to Radiation/Laser Safety and NRC Regulatory Compliance will be considered in lieu of Bachelors Degree 6–9 years of related experience is required Bachelor's Degree is preferred NRRPT Certification is highly desired Security Clearance Requirement A SECRET level clearance Work Environment Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and written. Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, management, and customers. Travel Requirements Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.). Physical Requirements Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk. Ability to lift >15 lbs. Other Essential Functions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement. Work attire must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk / hazard to the employee or others. This Position is Contingent upon Contract Award.
