Early Childhood Special Education Teacher

To plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in an early childhood learning environment that guides and encourages students with and without disabilities to develop and fulfill their potential. Work is performed under the supervision of the principal.

Essential Duties

• Develop and implement individualized educational plans (IEPs) based on each child's specific needs, in accordance with Virginia state guidelines and federal special education laws.
• Plan and deliver age-appropriate lessons and activities that promote the areas of language, physical, cognitive, social-emotional, and adaptive development of children who qualify for special education services.
• Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and materials to engage and support diverse learning styles.
• Assess and monitor each child's progress regularly, and adjust teaching strategies and interventions accordingly.
• Collaborate with other members of the education team, including general education teachers, therapists, and support staff, to ensure a comprehensive and integrated approach to special education.
• Communicate regularly and effectively with parents or guardians regarding their child's progress, goals, and any necessary interventions.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of each child's attendance, academic performance, behavioral development, and progress connected to individual goals.
• Participate in staff meetings, professional development opportunities, and relevant workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in early childhood special education.
• Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in the field of early childhood special education.
• Create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment that fosters the independence and self-confidence of children with special needs.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children with disabilities, preferably in an early childhood setting.
• In-depth knowledge of Virginia's special education laws and regulations, as well as federal laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
• Familiarity with evidence-based teaching strategies and interventions for children with diverse learning needs.
• Ability to develop and implement individualized educational plans (IEPs) and conduct ongoing assessments to measure progress.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with parents, colleagues, and support staff.
• Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with young children with developmental delays and disabilities.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for maintaining accurate records and documentation.
• Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and effectively manage time and resources.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree from an approved teacher preparation program in early childhood special education; or bachelor's degree with a major in early childhood special education or 27 semester graduate hours in early childhood special education, including specific course requirements outlined in 8VAC20-23-540.
• Master's degree preferred.
• Valid teaching license/certification in Early Childhood Special Education in the state of Virginia.

• Decision Making: Ability to analyze information and exercise sound judgment under varying levels of pressure.
• Stress Management: Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and emotional composure during high-stress situations or interpersonal conflicts.
• Concentration: Ability to maintain focus on complex tasks amidst frequent interruptions typical of a school environment.

Environmental Conditions

• Setting: Most work is performed in a climate-controlled indoor environment (office or classroom).
• Noise Level: Moderate to loud during peak activity times (e.g., passing periods, cafeteria, or gymnasium).
• Exposure: Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions during arrival/dismissal or transition between buildings.
