The University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is currently recruiting two Postdoctoral Fellows in Pediatric Psychology for the 2027-2028 academic year. The overall goal of this fellowship is to prepare the next generation of scientist-practitioners for careers in academic research and clinical applications.

Currently, we are offering a fellowship that will focus on one of three tracks depending on the interest of the applicant: Health Psychology, Neuropsychology, or Behavior Analysis. The fellows will spend about 70% of their time in clinical services and will have opportunities for research and structured educational activities.Fellows who choose the Health Psychology track will spend clinical time embedded in outpatient specialty clinics working with children and adolescents with various health conditions including diabetes, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic pain and will collaborate with various medical specialties. Depending on the successful applicant’s interest, they may choose to focus on one or two specific subspecialties of pediatric psychology (e.g., Pediatric Gastroenterology, Cardiology, etc.). Opportunities for inpatient consultation/liaison service are also available.

The Pediatric Neuropsychology track focuses on psychological assessment of learning and attention disorders and neuropsychological testing with youth with various medical conditions (including seizures, cancer, and kidney transplant patients). The fellows will spend clinical time in outpatient clinics including the LD/ADHD Clinic, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic, and Pediatric Neuropsychology Clinic.

The Behavioral track focuses on the assessment and treatment of challenging behavior displayed by children with (birth and older) and without (birth to 9 years) developmental disabilities. Challenging behavior is broadly defined as behaviors impacting the daily lives and functioning of the child and family in various settings such as home, school, and the community. Common challenging behaviors targeted in our clinical services include self-injury, aggression, property destruction, severe tantrums, noncompliance, feeding difficulties, and motor/vocal tics and habits. The fellows will spend clinical time across our behavioral services that range from brief consultation and assessment (e.g., Behavioral Pediatrics, Behavioral Feeding, Habit Reversal) to ongoing intervention (e.g., Behavioral Pediatrics, Behavioral Feeding, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Habit Reversal), to intensive services (e.g., Biobehavioral Day Treatment Clinic).

At the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the Division of Pediatric Psychology is housed within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. Our team of psychologists have specialties in three distinct areas including Neuropsychology, Health Psychology, and Behavioral Psychology.

Two one-year postdoctoral fellowship positions are available for candidates who will have obtained their PhD in clinical, counseling, or school psychology and completed an APA/APPIC approved internship before September 1, 2027. The fellows must obtain a provisional license to practice in Iowa by the start date. All applicants should send a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent describing clinical and research interests. Applicants applying to the Pediatric Neuropsychology track should also send a de-identified diagnostic report. Applications are being accepted immediately. Stipend is commensurate with NIH guidelines, and includes health benefits, paid vacation and sick leave, and time to attend national conferences.
