Certified Surgical Assistant I or II

Overview Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Surgical Assistant I or II in Suffolk, Virginia. This full‑time position (36‑hour shift) includes rotating shift work and required call. Must be within 30 minutes of the hospital for call purposes. Sign‑on bonus up to $7,500 (new graduate) – $15,000 for experienced (1 year) candidates. Hours and Call On‑call weekend rotations every 5th weekend (24‑hour, Friday‑Saturday‑Sunday), rotating weekday overnight call, and one holiday per year. Surgical Services offers flexible scheduling options such as 8, 10, or 12‑hour shifts to accommodate work‑life balance. Responsibilities The Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team. The Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, setting up tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of the surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the assistant performs pre‑operative and post‑operative duties to facilitate proper patient care and uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
