Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who coordinates patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient and identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems. The RN develops and implements an individualized plan of care and evaluates the patient's response. The RN promotes safe passage for their patients by assisting patients through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act. This role is utilized in hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with continuous staffing and may include on-call staffing.

Essential Functions of the Role: Using clinical reasoning, the RN conducts accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards. The RN identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs. The RN develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing plan of care and modifies it to meet clinical outcomes. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. The RN creates a compassionate and supportive environment for patients and families. The RN develops therapeutic relationships and manages emotional and physical pain. The RN recognizes and incorporates a patient's and family's unique differences into an individualized plan of care. The RN preserves and protects the confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and families. The RN facilitates learning for patients and families, nursing staff, and community members. The RN collaborates with colleagues to develop and implement an integrated plan of care. The RN uses strategies and resources for problem-solving for patients, families, and staff. The RN participates in shared governance and decision-making processes. The RN demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional growth through continuing education and networking. The RN contributes to the professional development of peers and others.

Key Success Factors: Knowledge of nursing and patient care standards and procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, and risk reduction principles. Ability to communicate thoughts clearly, both verbally and in writing. Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to observe changes in patients' medical conditions and communicate these changes effectively. Ability to provide quality, patient-centered care to all patients. General computer skills, including electronic medical documentation and email.
