The Lead Disability Underwriter plays a critical role in making informed decisions on individual disability cases, ensuring that applications for up to $15,000 in monthly indemnity are expertly evaluated. Leveraging extensive training and expertise, you will assess the insurability and premium classification of applicants while managing your workload effectively and fostering strong relationships with agencies. You will: Identify and gather necessary criteria for risk evaluation, employing a comprehensive approach to underwriting. Assess complex medical and financial information with minimal managerial input, using company guidelines to determine risk classifications. Engage professionally with field agents and home office teams to acquire key information and communicate decisions effectively. Consult with Medical Directors and senior underwriters to address intricate medical and non‑medical histories. Interpret underwriting policies and adhere to established guidelines and compliance standards. Explain Guardian product offerings and underwriting decisions to peers and agents. Collaborate with fellow underwriters and adjacent departments to streamline underwriting and administrative processes. Negotiate underwriting appeals with minimal guidance while liaising with agents and agency personnel. Review and document Medical Information Bureau codes in compliance with MIB standards. Communicate decisions to prospective policyholders clearly. Engage in ongoing training to enhance customer service and underwriting effectiveness, contributing to a high‑performance culture. You have: A bachelor's degree along with relevant industry education (e.g., LOMA, ALU, CLU) preferred. Previous experience in Individual Disability Underwriting is desirable. Familiarity with individual disability insurance products and processes. Strong understanding of medical terminology and financial documents (e.g., tax returns, profit & loss statements). Good computer skills and proficiency required. Excellent analytical, communication, negotiation, and decision‑making abilities. Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage time. Salary Range: $68,970.00 - $113,310.00. This salary range reflects a good faith estimate of base pay for the role. Actual salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. This position may also qualify for annual bonuses or other incentive compensation.
