Reference and Instruction Librarian

Description:Job Description Summary:Primarily responsible for coordinating teaching, training, and creation of tutorials for stakeholders. Responsible for reference and outreach services, selection and integration of electronic resources within the curriculum and research arenas. Participate in the continuous assessment of library services. Responsible for promoting curriculum-integrated use of high-quality open educational resources pertinent to health sciences instruction.Works with the Director in support of strategic planning and participates in divisional and university-wide planning efforts. Coordinates with the Director and other staff to create, prioritize and implement library goals and objectives.Duties and Responsibilities:(40%) Coordination of Teaching and TrainingCoordinates teaching and training efforts within the department and across campuses, to facilitate the coordinated use of innovative resources and teaching methodsIdentify and utilizes internal and external software and conferences for professional development opportunities for staff in order to maintain and develop teaching and training skillsWork with a team of librarians and faculty to initiate, redesign, and develop collaborative courses, modules, spaces, and research that support active learning pedagogy and curriculum designDevelops, manages, administers, and evaluates information literacy tutorials for incoming students(40%) Instruction and ReferencePrepares for and instructs, through traditional classroom, distance education modes, and standalone sessionsDevelops and updates library instructional and/or promotional materials using a variety of technologies based on usage statistics, user feedback, and new resource rolloutProvide research guidance to students and faculty both individually and in groups, including one weekly evening shiftOutreach to faculty, librarians, and academic technology staff to identify high-quality resources, including open educational resources and other low-cost materials, which help to meet program and course learning outcomesImprove or develop services with inclusion in mind, serving to reduce barriers to learning and create a sense of belonging among all library clientele(20%) External RelationsActively participate on committees in division and University in a positive and professional mannerOther duties as assignedSkills and AbilitiesFlexibility and open to changeFamiliarity with PubMedExperience with instructional technology designCritically evaluate the quality of educational resourcesCommitment to outstanding public service, flexibility, initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm for teaching and learningMaintain effective working relationships with colleagues, students, faculty, staff, healthcare professionals, and stakeholdersExcellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a highly collaborative, team-based environment.Ability to create effective documents and instructional content, not limited to screenshots and video captureCapacity for continuous improvement of self, and work processes, and a commitment to keeping current with changes to ensure professional skills remain relevant in future learning/library environmentsConfidently presents information in a clear and engaging manner, in dealing with patrons one-on-one or in groups, in formal and informal settings using appropriate graphics, animation, or videoEducation/Experience:MLS from an ALA accredited programPrevious experience equivalent to two full academic years as a professional librarian in an academic or health science libraryPhysical Requirements:Ability to focus on complex tasks for prolonged periods of time in order to complete tasks and projectsAbility to understand and communicate complex ideas by means of the spoken and written wordEmployee Status:RegularExemption Status:United States of America (Non-Exempt)Time Type:Part timeJob Shift:Pay Range:$29/hr to $40/hrSamuel Merritt University currently provides base salary ranges for all positions-on job advertisements-in the United States based on local requirements.
