Crossing Guard

The City of Portsmouth is seeking a dependable, safety-minded individual to join our team as a Crossing Guard for the upcoming school year. In this role, you will safely guard children as they commute to school, direct traffic, and act as a welcoming face in the community.

Pay rate: $25.00 per shift (Morning duty period counts as one shift)
Hours: Part-Time, 5 hours per week
Schedule : Monday-Friday: 8am-8:35am

NATURE OF WORK
The incumbent performs responsible human support and protective service work by stopping and directing traffic to ensure the safety of children commuting to and from school.

This position requires the physical capability to maintain prolonged alertness, stand for extended periods, and walk swiftly. While the exertion of force to move external objects is typically negligible (frequently up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 20 pounds), the role demands physical stamina to continuously hold and raise a handheld stop paddle. Vocal communication is necessary to convey detailed, critical instructions to others accurately, loudly, and quickly. Acute hearing is required to perceive emergency sirens, traffic hazards, and verbal communication amidst high-volume ambient noise. Visual acuity is necessary for peripheral vision, depth perception, and observing general surroundings. Additionally, the worker is regularly subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat.

SUPERVISION
Incumbent works under the general direction of the Parking Foreman I.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Assists children with crossing the street while going to/from school.
2. Stops and controls vehicular traffic at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely.
3. Controls children using the crossing to ensure that they conform to traffic regulations.
4. Takes appropriate action with children who fail to cooperate and reports such action to immediate supervisor.
5. Reports motorists who fail to observe safe motor vehicle operation in school crossing zone.
6. Checks traffic signals for proper operation; reports malfunctions.
7. Directs traffic when necessary; stops traffic to allow school bus to enter and exit school property.
8. Directs street crossings for parades and other special events as needed.
9. Performs related tasks as required.

ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT

Work is performed outside in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. The employee stands in close proximity to high-volume traffic and is exposed to moderate-to-high noise levels from traffic, sirens, construction, and pedestrian crowds. Employees will be provided with high-visibility safety vests and retroreflective stop paddles. The position involves regular exposure to outdoor pollutants, including car exhaust, dust, and airborne allergens. The guard works independently at assigned intersections with minimal direct on-site supervision.

The role requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, as well as the frequent lifting, holding, and extended raising of a handheld stop sign weighing up to 5 pounds. The employee must possess the physical agility to quickly step off curbs and move out of the path of oncoming traffic if necessary. The position demands acute hearing, peripheral vision, and depth perception to detect approaching emergency vehicles or traffic hazards.

The employee must sustain a high level of situational awareness and focus to anticipate driver and pedestrian behavior. The role requires rapid decision-making skills to respond calmly and effectively during traffic emergencies or accidents. The position directs large groups of children and adults while maintaining a polite, professional demeanor.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have a graduate equivalent diploma (GED) and a valid driver's license.
