The Senior Project Engineer on the Mega and M&A Engineering team will be responsible for design and engineering of utility scale solar PV and energy storage projects in development and construction phases. Responsibilities include lead and support engineering activities across the full project lifecycle, including design development and peer reviews, energy and performance modeling, equipment selection and specifications, and preparation of engineering calculations. Provide technical inputs to support Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) pricing estimates, RFP responses, permitting applications, design drafting, and technical due diligence for M&A project evaluations. Responsibilities also include engineering management, development and review of contract documents, participation in technical negotiations, preparation of procurement specifications, punch list development, and delivery of ongoing technical support throughout project execution.Designs will be developed, optimized, analyzed, and reviewed using industry-standard tools, including PVsyst, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, MS Office, and SharePoint. This role will provide technical leadership across multiple projects by defining design-phase roadmaps, establishing development engineering standards and processes, and training and mentoring junior engineers. The successful candidate will manage complex, multi-project priorities, communicate progress to the Senior Manager of Mega and M&A Engineering, and operate effectively with distributed and remote teams. A strong background in the development, execution, analysis, and design of utility-scale, transmission-interconnected PV and battery energy storage systems is required, along with a demonstrated ability and commitment to coaching and developing engineering talent. Experience with additional renewable technologies such as wind, green hydrogen, or hydroelectric systems is a plus. Excellent communication, planning, and task-management skills, combined with broad technical expertise, are essential for success in this role.The position is in Louisville, CO / Houston, TX / Salt Lake City, UT / or New York, NY and may include up to 25% travel to project locations and partner offices, including international travel.Key ResponsibilitiesProject DevelopmentM&APerform full technical due diligence and risk assessment for the M&A projectsFull project design evaluation to identify red flags and fatal flowsRedesign and update layouts, energy production estimates, EPC cost estimates, and equipment selectionsCoordinate with M&A developer to complete necessary RFP response documentationDesign for select projects up to 30% electrical, civil, structural, and mechanicalProject Execution MegaDevelop scopes of work and technical contract exhibits.Seek and evaluate proposals for engineering services.Manage engineering consultants and EPC contractors to develop project construction drawings and support materials.Perform technical project due diligence and project engineering design reviews.Coordinate feedback from internal stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) on design reviews.Value engineer PV and BESS system designs to maximize reliability and reduce overall project cost.Establish/review technical specifications of owner furnished equipment in coordination with Procurement and Sourcing.Technical support during construction including: Respond to contractor requests for information (RFIs).Perform quality assurance (QA)/ quality control (QC) checks in the field.Develop punchlists.Support commissioning activities with internal Technology/Commissioning teams and external stakeholders.Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance.Support internal Owner’s Engineering team through financing activities.Support Operations/Asset Management teams to resolve technical issues at operating sites.Assist Development and Project Management teams with budget development and key financial inputs.Develop and implement technical solutions to region/market specific requirements in coordination with Director of Engineering, Mega Projects.Growth and LeadershipContribute to process improvement initiatives for the development and execution of safe, quality, and high-performance projects.Develop inter-engineering processes for sharing information and best practices among the teamManage relationships with 3rd party engineering consultants and firms utilized by the teamMentor and train the team on changing trends in technology, best practices, and safetyParticipate in AES Clean Energy’s growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activitiesSkills and QualificationsPrimary QualificationsUndergraduate degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field5+ years of professional experience in solar PV system design, development, construction, and analysis preferredProficiency in PV system design, including 1-line and 3-line diagram conventions, NEC design requirements, overcurrent protection sizing, utility disconnecting means requirements, equipment selection, grounding methodologies, and short circuit current analysisExperience with medium voltage collector system designEffective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to work in a team environmentProficient with MS Office Suite“Plus” QualificationsGraduate degree in EngineeringPE licensePMP CertificationNABCEP PV Installation Professional certification2-5 years of experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems design and modelingExperience with MATLAB, ETAP, SKM, and other advanced modeling toolsSubstation/HV design experienceNFPA 70E, OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certificationAES is an Equal Opportunity Employer who is committed to building strength and delivering long-term sustainability through diversity and inclusion.
