Senior Radiation Therapy Specialist

Reporting to the Manager of Radiation Therapy and under the general direction of the Team Lead Radiation Therapist, the Specialty Senior Radiation Therapist is responsible for the delivery of safe, accurate simulations and radiation therapy treatments according to the prescription provided by the Radiation Oncologist and any treatment protocol. The Senior Radiation Therapist provides direct daily supervision to the Staff Radiation Therapist and serves as the team leader in their absence.The Specialty Senior Radiation Therapist independently performs advanced treatment techniques and quaternary patient care. These procedures have a high level of complexity and specialization. Proficiency is achieved through various rotations at the Mass General Main Campus in Boston, including the Proton Therapy Centers; Lunder Treatment area; and the Simulation and Brachytherapy Suite.

Education
Must be a graduate of an ARRT recognized program or equivalent in radiation therapy technology, BS required if graduated after 2000. Associate degrees will be accepted for candidates that completed their education prior to 2000.

Licenses and Credentials

Current Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist-Radiation Therapy License required

ARRT Certification or equivalent certification accepted by the State of Massachusetts with active registration and CE compliance required

Experience

Clinical work experience 2-3 years required

Experience with modern linear accelerators, simulation and verify / record systems

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Rotates to treatment and simulation areas as directed by the Manager and Team Lead Radiation Therapists, and demonstrates the knowledge and ability to maintain skills in one or more advanced, quaternary care technique, including but not limited to:

• Proton Therapy
• Brachytherapy
• Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy (IORT)
• Functional Stereotactic Radiosurgery
• Emergency On Call Simulation and Treatment
• On-line Adaptive Treatment Planning and Delivery
• Anesthesia Procedures
• Cranio-Spinal Irradiation (CSI)
• Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
• Water Bath Technique
• Fabrication of complex immobilization devices (extremity board, MGTC frame)

• Demonstrate knowledge and skills to meet age-specific requirements for population being served on their unit, including infants through elderly patients.
• Experience with modern and advanced radiation therapy techniques required
• Experience with state-of-the-art treatment delivery systems and sub-systems (e.g. record & verify, x-ray imaging) required

• Displays sound judgment and makes confident decisions
• Demonstrates calmness and the ability to show patience in stressful situations
• Provides guidance and shares knowledge with Staff and Student Therapists regularly
• Demonstrates the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize them effectively
• Adapts quickly to change and demonstrates the ability to analyze and solve complex problems efficiently

• Ability to teach student therapists and other department observers
• Physical reach to work with equipment as high as 5-6 feet above the floor
• Physical strength to assist or lift impaired patients from a wheel chair or stretcher
• Physical strength to lift accessories weighing up to 40 pounds
• Operation of patient assistive devices such as ceiling lifts
• Capable of comfortably lifting and inserting patient accessories into the treatment units at all possible treatment angles during patient treatments.

Working Conditions

• Duties can be performed in the following locations -Mass General Main Campus in Boston. Radiation Oncology locations include but not limited to: Lunder LL3, Proton Center and CoxLL. Occasional or temporary coverage at Mass General Rad Onc network locations may be required including Newton Wellesley, Emerson and Northshore Cancer Center
• Incumbents work in close physical proximity to team members
• Must be willing to work flexible hours/days depending on department needs and patient volume
